Well, as far as I know, maria's next goal is to be at least top 33 before Aussie Open '04 arrives so that she can be seeded for the first time in her 5th grand slam appearance. That's why she is scheduled to play 3 upcoming low-level tier tournaments plus this week to grab as many as points as she can.
As well as she's trying to win a first WTA title this year and that's why she chose to play lower-level tier tournaments. She is working slowly on the way to the top.
When Anna was at Maria's age, she made a big mistake for not entering low-level tournaments (she was ALWAYS playing tier II or better). She could have won but that was too bad, she had too much ego...

That was her problem. It cost her in her tennis career. Her ego has gone down when she finally entered into tier III or lower tournaments. She should have done that a long time ago.
I expect Maria to be in the top 20 easily next year. Being in the top 10 is tough to call at this moment. Otherwise she would exceed my expectations for next year.
