Rollo, thanks for reminding me of the World Invitational from Hilton Head! I used to love that. It was a men/women tourney and they would play it out over several weeks. It always seemed Bjorn and Evonne won.

But the 4 woman event I was talking about was different. I actually have a SI article about it from '76 that i am looking for. I am pretty sure it only had Chris, Evonne, Billie Jean and Martina (or Wade). It was made for TV and only shown on one weekend. those were the days!

The first tennis match I saw was this year at Wimbledon.I was spending the week with my grandma,and I was bored,so I watched tennis.I think the first I saw was Serena Williams vs. Jennifer Capriati.Then I got hooked.There may have been one before that,but that one stuck in my mind.

It was the Fed Cup final 1998. I saw all the singles matches between Martina Hingis, Patty Schnyder, Conchita Martinez and Arantxa Sanchez - Vicario. This was the first time I really watched a tennis match from the beginning. After this I have always been following tennis and especially these two Swiss players!

Agassi vs Ivanisevic WIM1992<br />My mother was, is, a hugh fan of Agassi and she didn't dare to watch the match, she was sitting in bath. I head to watch the match and tell her who was winning, how the rallies develloped, etc. From that day on I becameTHE BIGGEST fan of Agassi.

I think the first match I really watched with full awareness was the final or semi final of the Mahwah event, I don't remember when. Mary Pierce played Mary Joe Frenandez there.<br />As I am German, I probably saw parts of Steffis matches before while playing in the living-room as my father is into sports as well.

The first tennis match i saw was a doubles match of Emilio Sanchez Vicario. I think i was about 6 and i totally dislike it as i didnt understand how the game ran and its rules.

But i started to follow tennis seriously in Roland Garros '95, and it was a Conchita's match.

First match I have seen completely was Fed Cup semis doubles match 98:

Sanchez-Martinez bt Raymond-Fernandez 6-3 6-7 11-9.

then i didnt see any match until Hannover 99 Venus Williams vs Ai Sugiyama 6-4 7-5 when I was in hospital, and then I saw tennis in hospital until Rome. Then I became a tennis fan.

MaryLinda-do you remember if it was early or late 1976? The women used to have a hard court exhibition in Texas also, called the L'egg. In January of 76 Evert beat Goolagong in the final.

The World Invitational was a personal favorite since I got to play on the center court years later! <br />If I could only win the lottery I'd move to Hilton Head in a minute!

I only started watching tennis last year, by accident in fact <img src="redface.gif" border="0"> <br />The first match I watched ever was Venus vs Dementieva at the Olympics. After watching Venus, I was hooked on tennis ever since!

I'm pretty sure the first match was the '84 US Open final between Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. I always used to pull for Chrissy over Nav in their matches, but now I like Martina and can't stand Evert...... commentating, that is.
