Okey Dokey, I am thinking again... And would like to ask you people which of these following(or you can add your own opinions) scenario's will occur in 2002?
1. Martina Hingis wins RG

2. Mary Pierce comes back and gets inside the top 10.

3. Monica wins the French or another Slam.

4. Venus Williams becomes #1

5. Serena Williams wins another slam in 2002

6. Kim Clijsters wins a Slam.

7. Justine wins RG.

8. Chanda Rubin re-enters the bottom teens.

9. Anna K wins a tournament

10. Alexandra Stevenson rises to at least the mid 30's in rank.

11. Jennifer Capriati wins another Slam.

12. Dokic wins a Slam.

Also, [email protected]#13!!! When I originally mailed Anne Bonney about the problems with the board she talked - sarcastically - of it being OZ 2002 before it got fixed. Well we're nearly there, honey!

As for the picks: Anna K has to win a tournament this year, or else alarm bells are going to go off BIGTIME!! That's obviously just my personal opinion. Even if she gets back in the Top Ten, I just feel she's gotta win something in singles.
...I've thought of couple more:

#14 Patty Schnyder cracks the Top 16 (again )

#15 A Williams wins RG

#16 Lindsay Davenport doesn't win a slam

#17 Martina gets bageled at least once by a Top Ten player

#18 Martina's Hingis and Navratilova team up for doubles at some stage!

1. If healthy and on form, she has to be one of the 5 best bets
2. Unlikely. Her current rank would hamper her too much. A possible return to the top 10 would more likely occur the following year.
3. I'd say she has an even better shot than Hingis
4. Very probable
5. Depends largely on how Venus plays. They tend to do well at the same events. I'd give her a 50/50 shot of picking one up somewhere.
6. A good possibility. She seems to be comfortable on any surface now, which is not something we could have said 6 months ago.
7. I would make her the 8th or 9th most likely for this one
8. I'd say its probable
9. I have a feeling she won't. I anticipate a year of struggles, with the elusive title arriving in 2003.
10. Probably not. I envision her as a #45-#60 player.
11. I have a feeling she won't, but will make 1 or 2 Finals.
12. Much much better player these past few months. Someone else I view as a potential Finalist, but not taking the trophy.
13. Probably the week after Pete blows Guga off center court in the RG Final.

1. Will not do it.
2. Capabale of imho.
3. Will do it this year, a good feeling.
4. Hell yeah, a matter of time.
5. Hell yeah
6. Not yet
7. Not a chance in 2002, this is Seles's to lose.
8. YES! has the talent needs the injury free season.
9. Not this year, she needs to play Tier3's or get a coach.
10. I really believe with her old coach that she will improve. Good feeling about ALex can only rise imho.
11. NOT!
12. Not quite yet.
13. see # 2 and 12

Hey Dawn this is a great thread!

1. She'll be one of the favourites

2. Too hard to do so with her current ranking but look for tremendous improvements from her

3. If she does, it can *only* be the French, but I doubt it

4. She should! I think she will get there for a brief period and go back and forth with another player

5. She should too! Most likely Wimbledon

6. I think she will, most likely at the Australian Open, if not there, I don't think she will!

7. She'll be one of the favourites

8. Not sure about this cause I don't know Chanda too well nor the bottom teens players

9. Anna K wins a tournament, only if she's willing to play much lower tier events, she needs to stop going for the big tournaments cause she's not going to win there, not just yet...

10. Again see 8!

11. She should but I don't see it... if these last few months are anything to go by. She will be very consistent though.

12. Not just yet...

here's my answers for 2002.

1. Martina Hingis wins RG--anything is possible. jury is still out for me until Jan.

2. Mary Pierce comes back and gets inside the top 10--same is Martina, anything is possible, but not sure if she'll reach the top 10, but if she's injury free, she definitely can.

3. Monica wins the French or another Slam--very possible considering her form last summer, and assuming she gets more fit.

4. Venus Williams becomes #1--I'm counting on it.

5. Serena Williams wins another slam in 2002--I'd say highly probable based on her form at the end of 2001.

6. Kim Clijsters wins a Slam-she will one day, but not in 2002.

7. Justine wins RG--hot prospect, but I don't think it'll happen next year.

8. Chanda Rubin re-enters the bottom teens-she can, providing that she is injury free.

9. Anna K wins a tournament--I think she can do it.

10. Alexandra Stevenson rises to at least the mid 30's in rank--based on her form at the end of this year, I think she is very likely to go up, esp if she gets a good draw at Oz.

11. Jennifer Capriati wins another Slam--doubtful. too many people that will be out to get her next year.

12. Dokic wins a Slam--no way! (not in 2002)

1. Not unless she gets her act together fast this year. She's got the best chances of winning this out of all the Slams though.

2. I have a nasty feeling Pierce will retire soon. If she does come back, I don't think she'll finish in the top 10.

3. Absolutely not. Monica's Slam days are behind her.

4. Yes, IF SHE PLAYS MORE. It's up to her.

5. Not if she has to beat Venus. If someone else puts out V, certainly she'll win a Slam.

6. I suspect so.

7. Wouldn't bet on it for 2002, definitely for the future though. Having said that, I wouldn't bet on anyone to win RG, and Justine's probably the girl who's the least unlikely to lose there!

8. Hmm, tough. She'll re-enter the top 30 certainly, but competition's tough to get into the top 20...

9. I'll be optimistic and say 'YES' to this one.

10. No. Top 50 at a pinch.

11. Doubt it. There'll be no more taking-people-by-surprise (Oz) or taking-advantage-of-everyone-either-crashing-out-or-playing-crap (RG) nextr.

12. Definitely not next year. Probably in the futue though.

My 2¢:

1. Could happen. Has to be fit, and get more oomph on her serve. She hit it harder in 97. Now she rarely cracks 90 MPH on the first serve. If that doesn't change, she'll be hard-pressed to win Tier II's. Needs to be less defensive. Must get her game back to where it was in 97, and add some fitness and just a bit more power.

2. If she's healthy all year and plays a full schedule, should at least get into the teens. Would be smart to play a couple of Tier III's to get some matchplay. Motivation could be a problem, having accomplished most of her career goals. If she struggles all year, it may be her last.

3. Results picked up when she returned fitter last summer. If she pulls a "Capriati", and gets even fitter, is a major threat for the first 2 slams, and has a shot at the US Open.

4. If she plays a full schedule, this is highly probable.

5. Either needs to have someone else perform a "Venus-ectomy" on the draw, or has to beat Venus somewhere in a match that counts to prove to herself that she can do it.

6. Possible. There is a lot of talent at the top, and the emergence of Jennifer, and the resurgence of Serena and Monica only make it tougher. I think it's about 50-50. Wouldn't be surprised if she won a slam, or if she failed to make a final. Made great strides in getting results on all surfaces.

7. I think she has more tools than Kim, but runs into some mental problems in big matches. Has trouble closing the deal. Needs to improve that aspect to take home a big prize. I don't expect her to win a slam in 2002, but I can't rule it out, as she has the game.

8. Needs good health all year, and smart scheduling. Play some lower Tier events until she gets her rhythm back. When she returned this fall from her 6th injury layoff of the year, her game was at only about 60%, yet she still was tough to beat. Has only about 80 points to defend prior to Eastbourne. If she's seeded at Roland Garros, this is a lock.

9. Needs to get her serve back to being more reliable. Has all the tools. Could happen if she's forced to "play down" by her ranking. The WTA would be doing her a favor if they don't fudge the wild card rules in her favor. If she plays at least 4 events at Tier III or lower, I'd say there's at least a 60-65% chance of her winning her first main tour title.

10. Possible. I heard she's back with her original coach (Fischer). She seems to be concentrating on being a player now instead of a celebrity. Needs to clean up her game a lot, as her slowness afoot is a liability.

11. I'd say the odds were against it. Her play tailed off after Roland Garros. However, with the pressure of reaching #1 off, maybe can relax and play like she did early this year. I don't expect it, but can't rule it out.

12. Not in 2002. Needs to add a bit more variety in her game, including some coming forward.

13. If the info I've been getting is to be believed, I'd say about 30-70 for it being up within a month. They're bound to be missing those 1.5 million hits a month by now.

14. Maybe. You never know with Patty. Depends on her focus.

15. I don't expect it. It is the one they're least likely to win. However, it's Lindsay's weakest, too, and the other leading contenders all have question marks.

16. Certainly could happen. Her main disadvantage is that her best surfaces overlap with Les Williams, and she's had trouble beating them.

17. Just a single set bagel? Maybe. But if she's of a form to let that happen, she won't be winning any slams.

18. Won't happen. Hingis says there's too much pressure.

19. Won't happen. Momo could win RG, she could even beat Martina in the final. But it won't be a double bagel.
20. Needs to work on her forecourt game. Or else play a bunch of lower Tier events. Can cover the baseline well and rip groundies, but she looks bad at the net.

21. Won't happen, but I'm sure they won't go uncriticized.

1. Maybe, if something wierd happens and Kim, Serena or Venus get knocked out in the first round.

2. Very possible, come on Mary!

3. Maybe, if #1 happens for the RG, as for other slams I am not sure.

4. Only if she plays more, come on VEE!

5. This is going to happen, I am sure!

6. Very possible, I think it might be RG!

7. I dont think so, at least not 2002.

8. I dont think so, on the down hill of her career.

9. No one can predict this , which Anna will show up ?

10. Same as #9 ?

11. Same as #9 and #10 ?

12. I dont think so, cant beat the top players!

13. I dont know!

I got one:

22. Can this thread continue without posters taking potshots at other posters or a big argument breaking out, ruining the whole thread?

2. Highly possible. If she's healthy

3. If Jen can, Monica can.

I would remind people who doubt #8 that Chanda was #11 at the time of her injury last year. She played more than well enough all last year to be in the top 10, and was held back by some crappy draws. (Playing #1 8 times in a year and a half? Not to mention the other top players.) One major injury (and a couple of attendant injuries), and she's finished? How quick we are to write some people off.

Never really known much about Tennis in General but anyway...

1 Possible
2 Also Possible
3 Could go close
4 If she plays a full year then yes, she could take up a long term position there.
5 Always in with a chance
6 Don't think so...
7 Would hope to see it!
8 Like to see Chanda become a top ten resident again
9 Yep
10 Im not fond of her so I hope not
11 Good chance
12 In future, but not next year...

So, basically about 11 players will win a slam next year, or something like that...

Oh and Julie wins it all in 2003...
