I rarely hear people talk about the majors Steffi missed due to injury or whatever. How many did she miss in her career? I know she missed the 1995 and 1996 Australians. Considering she won the other 3 majors in each year, it's hard to believe she wouldn't have won at least one of those Australians had she played. Steffi could be sitting on 24 majors total and 3 Grand Slams

Mary and Monica are lucky she didn't play those two ;)

Well i think you could say this of any player. IF Serena Williams had played last year's Australian Open would she have won the event and the calender Grand Slam? IF Monica was not stabbed she would she have won more Slams? IF Martina Hingis had won last year's Australian instead of blowing 4 match points, would she still be playing?

We could start a what if's thread for every player.

Jeng, I think the question should be how many grand slams did Steffi Graf win because Monica Seles who was dominating women's tennis in 1993, was stabbed? My answer is seneral. But there is no way I can give an exact number. The stabbing changed everything. Other players who won grand slams in Monica's absence also benefited from the stabbing. Seles was only 19 and taking over women's tennis in 1993 and Graf was clearly number 2. I think Monica would have dominated women's tennis for many years and won several of the grand slam singles titles that Steffi won in Monica's absence. The heinous stabbing of Seles changed women's tennis history. I think Monica was on her way to winning 18 or more grand slam titles. But she ended up with only 9 thanks to Gunther Parche. :(

We all know Steffi was injury prone. ESpecially later in her career. But she's an all time great. :) And I miss watching her run around the tennis court with her great speed! :D

I can't agree with what you say .
I don't think steffi need your excuse for such as 24 slams because she always did her best for tennis with her struggle despite all difficult situations which no human being should bear.
we are proud of steffi graf and we despise all excuses.

I think seles' ending up with only 9 should attribute much to seles herself not to Gunther Parche.

I'd hate to see the results of you not thinking ... yet here you are talking about Steffi struggling despite difficult situations which no human being should bear ? :fiery:

Good point Kart. stefanieforever, why are you saying that Monica Seles ending up with only 9 grand slam singles titles is her fault and not the fault of Gunther Parche who stabbed Monica when she was only 19 and dominating women's tennis?

kart that's true, she withdraw 3 hours before the match.

but I disagree about wimbledon 91 , steffi was injured too and pretty bad considering what happened at fed cup so that had nothing to do with luck
just two decisions, one won and one lost.

and steffi could, could

yeah she could have won more then 40 slams if she had not been so vain and had listened to ivan lendl in 87, if she had realized to win on grass doesn't mean you have to hate clay, if she had not tanked matches because campers are a nicer place to be, she could and everthing could have been different

but that's not the way it is, fact is she made those decisions, she was not forced as far as I know
even living with an alcoholic who humiliated her in the front of the world, if she suffered from that two years then she did that herself since she was an adult and could have kicked him out or send him to a clinic

but she still deserves more credit for her post 95 comebacks then a certain other player got in hers (and I say it even when most people know who I mean. I don't mean monica) ;)

french 91, indeed the whole scandales(the first, since from what I heard she handled the tax one very well, not that she had a choice). making bets against her and saying she will never achieve this and this, saying things to the press that he had total control over her and paid her lovers so that she would not get named lesbian etc, bragging to others that he hit her and etc

but as said steffi was an adult she could have kicked him out as soon as she was 18. I know she didn't because they were afraid the press would get even worse (steffi's mother told that in an interview) but still

blimey i never knew things were that bad for her & her father was that cruel. with hindsight it would have been better to kick him out right from the start but i guess he was right he did have total control.
here's another question i remember steffi saying that her mum went to all her matches but in the 90s i always reember her dad being there was she always in the backgroun?

I was joking about Wimbledon 1991.

I suppose Steffi is another comeback queen though - French 1999 is a prime example.

Speaking of 1995, I have to say though that US open 1995 final was one of her best wins IMHO - I don't think many people expected her to win with all the publicity about her father that was going on at the time and with the return of Monica who had basically destroyed the field at the Canadian open.

and she had a bad first round draw too since amanda c had just beaten her. I think steffi had good people around her those days who helped her.

I think the whole year was unbelievable. maybe the media exaggerated a little when they said she would end up in a wheelchair during her long breaks in 94/95 but I have no doubt she was in some serious pain. she said she went over the whole earth to find a solution  (of course this werbel injury was also the cause of her thigh and knee injuries. something to do with to much pressure on the legs)
