What band do you really enjoy that you think hardly any of the other posters have heard of?

I am going to see Jon Spencer Blues Explosion this weekend and I don't really ever hear anyone else speak of them. I also like the band that Jon Spencer and his wife are members of called Boss Hog.

Has anyone else ever heard of the bands or enjoy them?

Umm..what just happened? It said the thread was closed when I tried to post..oh I see now. Volume 3.

Jonathon:Gads! What an awful trip to get there but what an amazing review! I really am so jealous that you got to experience it all, it sounds like something you’ll always remember. I also hope that the shows get a DVD release because I would love to see it. Yes, Adey, bring on the review.

I have watched the BBC documentary and it was amazeballs as well. David even enjoyed it. I plan on watching it again. And probably again, too.

That One Republic song IS awful but dammit, sometimes shiz is just catchy and you can’t help the love. In a coincidence, I blew a car speaker this morning blaring the Keisza-Hideaway song I mentioned. It must be the Music Snob Gods showing their displeasure at my song choices..it really is good though. Is it on the pop stations overseas?

David: Good. My feelings were going to be hurt if you were 20 minutes away and didn’t have time for even a brief What Band encounter/cocktails.

Lastly, I bought 3 new pairs of heels during my lunch hour yesterday and I’ve spent at least 3 hours of my work day today staring down at my feet and admiring my killer, black, BCBGMaxAzria, cut out heels. Purchasing footwear really does fill my heart with joy. Being this shallow has GOT to be underrated.

That song (Hideaway) has been massive over here Ang; I think it was #1 for a few weeks in the UK. If you like that I recommend you try the Disclosure album that was in my year-end list last year :)

Just spotted that Rachael Yamagata has a new album coming soon via PledgeMusic. I've bagged a signed vinyl.

Hi Beat!

I just read that Imogen Heap has a new album out and I've read good things. Has anyone checked it out? Also been hearing mixed reviews on the new Blonde Redhead album.

I just checked my fave local music venue's calendar and the following peeps are coming within the next few months:

Charlie XCX
Tennis
Angel Olsen
Caribou
FKA Twigs - Beat, you just mentioned her and this is the only show she is playing in Florida and it's only 20 bucks a ticket. I just downloaded her newest album to see if I'd dig it
Caribou
Anberlin
Belle & Sebastion - gads. I'd forgot about them.
Flying Lotus
Metronomy
and last but not least:
Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band (I feel like I need to see them based on the name alone)

Any thoughts on any of these acts..?

i guess you could file banks, FKA twigs, maybe lorde and kelela under the same genre, but i'm not sure what they call that genre  slow but twitchy electro-r'n'b?

the FKA twigs album is great, despite being a bit samey, and that's why it need repeated listens. i have no idea what she does live, because hers seems like the kind of music that can't simply be reproduced on stage.

i'm actually listening to the new blonde redhead album this very moment! happy to see them back. three songs in, and i like it, though i read mixed reviews, too.

angel olson is playing in zurich soon as well. i'm definitely going to see her, and i think you might enjoy her slightly fucked-up take on country and americana.

metronomy i love, and they're pretty good live, too.

i remember terry and me being in love with caribou's last album "swim" from 2010. haven't heard any of his new stuff.

p.s. reading the very first post this thread ever had (12 years ago!) inspired me to go and listen to the jon spencer blues explosion and boss hog. :)

I didnt know it was your birthday, Dahveed, hope it was a good one!

It's amazing to think we've all been here 12 years! I love that we keep coming back, even though we're all connected elsewhere too :)

Ang, I quite like Charli XCX. She's still very young, an is an independent pop singer/songwriter who is doing really well. I bet you know some of her songs, even if you don't recognise the name. One of her tracks is a smash in the States at the moment ('Boom Clap') and she wrote that awful "I don't care/I love it" song for those screechy women, but don't hold that against her. This was my favourite off her first album (about two years ago), but she's already changed her style quite a lot:

Ha! 12 Years. I would have never thought when I started this thread that I'd develop long lasting friendships with you beautiful lot of people. I can't believe it's been that long since the JSBX concert. That is still my favorite concert of all time. I think it was because they were our absolute favorite band at the time, it was the first time we saw them live, we got to meet them before the show and the venue was super small and they just rocked our faces off hard and loud for a solid 90 minutes. I still have a tank top that I got from the merch stand at that show - it's a tad snugger than it was then. Fucking old age, metabolism, bullshiz.

Anywho: Wow, Beat. You knew a majority of the acts. From your description the Angel Olson sounds up my alley sonically but I will have to get over her name being Angel. I added Metronomy to my download list as well. I do recall the Caribou album. I need to revisit it. I remember a few of you digging it.

Jonathon, I do know the Boom Clap song. It's catchy. I didn't know it was her. I'll have to check the video out after work.

It sounds like a lot of the acts could be promising. I might just choose 2 or 3 - the tickets are all cheap and the venue is small and not far from my house and they always have a nice variety of acts.

IKR  but i think she really is called angel and it's not a pseudonym. blame her parents.
her "burn your fire for no witness" album is one my favourite albums of the year so far.

just noticed that i wrote olson in my previous post, but it's olsen.

i also have loads of t-shirts from gigs from another lifetime. my favourite being one by einstürzende neubauten which depicts a pissing horse. i always wear it when i play tennis.

I'm not too fond of that Olsen album, tbh. Probably too weird for me ;)

Ha! David, I only check this thread as well. I don’t read anything else.

Hi Frode! :wavey:

Beat: I checked out Metronomy and FKA Twigs last night. After just a listen of each, I’m pretty sure I’m going to really like both of those. I downloaded a ton of stuff yesterday (I love Play Music and now that our Sonos system and it are compatible, it’s like a music fairy tale). I am going to check out Angel Olsen (spelling noted, like the rich twins who have Daddy issues) and Charlie XCX. A friend suggested that I might like Courtney Barnett so I downloaded that. I guess she’s Australian so perhaps our resident, hot stuff Australian has heard of her? Also Brian Jonestown Massacre, Margot & the Nuclear So & So’s, the Raveonettes and the New Pornagraphers newest discs. Pretty excited about all the new music actually.

Hi Joris! I don’t see Angel Olsen being your taste, lol. You should check out JSBX though. I do think you might find something of theirs you loved.

This is the only thread I read on this board too. Once in a blue moon I go into General Messages, but it's more to remind myself what an appalling pit of humanity it is.

Ang, I was raving about Courtney Barnett a while ago, I really like her album. I also posted a video of her covering an entire INXS album live. Terry wasn't keen if I recall correctly. She's an acquired taste, but I love her lyrics and delivery. Start with her best known track, Avant Gardener.
