wow, what a year this has been. i am constantly mesmerized by the tour year in and year out. there are so many things happening, good to some, bad to some and sometimes even both.

this year we saw ... and we should thank

a couple youngsters breaking through. kim, justine , elena d and jelena were the players we saw improved even more. meghann emerged as the new and invisible threat. but there are several others like daniela hantuchova, iroda tulyaganova, myskina, mikaelan, widjaja and the like. it is wonderful for the sport and for the tour to see fresh faces and games like these. who could be the next breakthroughs next year?

of course, what else has not been said about jenny's incredible comeback? i was personally but refreshingly stunned to hear of her australian open win and her RG win. she is a testament that anything is possible with a belief and hard work. its been inspiring.

serena won the season ending championships despite being out for more than a month which just goes to show how great a player she really is. she annonced to the world that she would go for that top spot next year. we would loved to see you get there serena.

ah my dear lindsay. who would have thought that she'd end up number 1 again this year? (well, aside from me and the rest of the tower of power clan). thank you for giving your fans so many reasons to cheer. the TOP loves you lindsay!

marti, marti, marti ... there are several times this year when i personally wanted to give her a hug. you have had a tough year this time around but judging from what kind of champion you are, i know you'd find a way to bounce back. you can do it martina.

venus, what an awesome player she is. and even more, what an awesome champion. she has really matured in every way possible and even more so this year. she grabbed the two biggest titles this year, prestige and money-wise: wimbeldon and the us open. despite all this hoopla surrounding her, she has just picked up her racket, went to the court, and made a lot of people shut up without saying a single word. good going girl.

monica, the legend. she stuck to her decision to not play munich and most if not all of us respected her for that. she has continued to compete and showed us how to mix a desire to win with a child-like love for the game. you have created so many sweet memories for all of us, in this year alone. thank you for that.

allez amelie! the french number 1 does not say so much but its more of what we see on court. her flare and talent is deicious to watch and with it, she can beat just about anyone. she pocketed her first tier 1 this year. we hope you win more.

the tour veterans: arantxa picked up two titles in '01. she still got that grit going. amanda picked a title as well and qualified for the singles and doubles at the chase. she is still a threat to everyone. maggie maleeva has been phenomenal this year. lisa, the doubles queen but a singles success as well. kim po, lori mcneil, rennae stubbs and others have shown us that they still got it going on.

the retirees: nathalie T, what classic player she is and what a memorable personality. the most vivid memory i have of her was winning that semifinal match against zvereva at the 98 wimby. loved every minute of it. sandrine, i still remember her winning 98 filderstadt and has continued be quite a contender on any surface. anke, we are continually proud of you for all that you have achieved. silvia, for blossoming late in your career and winning a title you certainly have worked for all these years. to all retirees, thank you all for the memories. we would always remember you.

and to everyone else who have contributed to this year. mary and conchita are being missed so much. anna k has had some bad luck with the injuries, so was chanda r. alex stevenson is still working at it. patty is screaming to regain her form. babsi is still here and still in contention. so are the asians, tammy, ai, shinoboe, wynne and the rest. paola came back. viriginia scored big. harkleroad was discovered. so was safina, kanepi and bartoli. there were many other stories in 2001. both delightful and sad, inspiring and puzzling which made us all feel and should make us all thankful.

i can't wait for next year ...

Great post, jacs!

Biggest upsetting tournament ever in 2001 is Roland Garros! It was Grand Slam! But I really enjoyed watch the tournament especially Barbara Schett beat Venus Williams in Round 1! Barbara played much better in 2001 than last year

A great round up jacs! It's great to see that people can be gracious towards other players (and fans) - a true fan of Tennis (and of Lindsay of cause )
