SEMIFINAL PREVIEWS

..........

Li Na is the favourite in her match against Melinda Czink; Hantuchova will be involved in 2 semifinal matches today: singles and doubles

...................

Will the top 2 doubles seeds meet in the final for the third consecutive time?

Day 5 in WTA Tour usually means the day of the final: but not this week, when due to the error of the tournament director (me ) today the semifinal matches will be played.

MELINDA CZINK VS. NA LI

Na Li and tournament surprise Melinda Czink will be the first 2 players opening up the program, as they face each other in the first of the 2 singles semifinals. Of couse, the 2 players have never faced each other yet, because A) this is only the 4th week on the Tour :p and B) Czink only joined the tour at the beginning of this week, making an incredible run to the semi final.

MELINDA CZINK [HUN]

Czink is another one of those players who aren't flashy at all, but are just able to win matches even though their opponents seem far stronger than them. But, Czink also has an extremely fierce serve, giving her many esay points on first serve and really has a consistent, topspin second serve, which can really be annoying when the other player is tense.

NA LI [CHI]

Not much of a different game play for Na: an allround style of play, and some consistent groundstrokes make her one of the better player one Tour, though her results have been very inconsistent: in the first week she reached the final of the Tier II in Bali, losing easily to Justine, but gaining the 2nd seed in the nect tournament, but losing in the 2nd round after having a bye in the 1st round. Into the 3rd week, again, a first round loss for the chinese player, who had a big drop in the rankings, to then reach the semifinal again in this weeks Tier I.

So, what will be the outcome of the match? Just from looking at the players game plan, I'd say it will be a long, grueling match, but you never know what can happen in a tennis match....

HENIN/SHARAPOVA VS. (1) MYSKINA/KOURNIKOVA

This match will follow the first singles semifinal in the day session on centre court. There are no head to heads between the 2 teams.

KOURNIKOVA/MYSKINA [RUS/RUS]

Well, what to say about this team, after a QF loss in the first week, they made it to the final of the next 2 tournaments, once losing, once winning, to the same team, Dell'Acqua/Hantuchova, with whom they share the first seed this week. Of course they are a very solid team, but sometimes, like in the final of the Sydney International, when they are losing they tend to get a little but down on themselves, calling each other "Bitch" or "Whore", but when they are leading, boy they are on fire. Myskina is often hesitant to come into the net, while Kournikova seems born to be there, even though in this weeks singles match she displayed more of an all court game, which should work to advantage in singles, but what about doubles? In the last weeks, Kournikova displayed a hirrd serve, but really seems to have worked on it on the past weekend, because in her singles match she only hit 4 double faults in the match, as opposed to even 17 in one of her matches in Sydney.

HENIN/SHARAPOVA [BEL/RUS]

Well, 2 players who always reached the SF in each of their tournaments, but were never able to cause an upset. For 2 weeks in a row, they lost to top seeds Hantuchova/Dell'Acqua. But the 2 players really seem to compliment each other: Maira is the one with the stronger serve, which Justine is the one with the better groundstrokes. Justine played very bad in the last 2 tournaments, but this week really made a come back and she is in the semifinals: will her good form in singles affect her doubles play in a positive way? We'll just have to wait and see....

(3) JUSTINE HENIN HARDENNE VS. DANIELA HANTUCHOVA

This is the first match of the night session, played on centre court. There are no previous head to heads between the players.

JUSTINE HENIN HARDENNE [BEL]

Justine Justine Justine.... Her career on the WTA Tour has really been a roller coaster ride up till now. After an great run to the title in the first week, it looked almost as if she was going to dominate the tour, when suddenly she lost her first match in 2 consecutive tournaments. This week she had a really tough match in the 2nd round, beating doubles specialist Dell'Acqua, 6-0 5-7 7-5, in what was a really tense match, where the aussie even served for the match, but Justine was just able to win the importnant points, and this showed that has come out of her slump even more than if she had won 6-1 6-1. In the Quarterfinals, she had yet another tough match with newbie Shahar Peer, who really made Justine fight and win the match not deppending on her opponents errors. WIll her powerful groundstrokes and refound form be enough to beat her opponent?

DANIELA HANTUCHOVA [SVK]

Daniela is a player who you look at and think: "why isn't she ranked higher?". Well, Daniela has had some very consistent results in the past weeks, but was never able to cause a big upset, apart from when she beat 5th seed Na Li 2 weeks ago, but Na was in a bit of a slump. Daniela has an all round game, with beautiful, flowing groundstrokes, and her forehand is dynamite. She is a great fighter and never gives up, not even when it seems as though there is no hope.

Quite a see saw first set score wise, though the level of play didn't changa much. Na lead through out almost the whole set, she was always up a break apart from when she went down 3-4, after which she won 3 games in a row. Na isn't going for power but just placement, using angles great, and though Melinda is an amazing mover, she just wasn't able to return the balls with enough depth to put Na in trouble.

Well, this match was close to perfect from Na, a great win over a dangerous newcomer which could have caused a few problems. Czink's patient and annoying game, running down every ball and hitting high, topspin moonballs really wasn't enough to even make this match a challenge. Na was just too consistent and remained concentrated through out the match, never letting her opponent get a lead. Melinda get get mad at herself for this, she got the the semi final of her first tournament and lost to a great player. As for Na, she now will play the final against Henin or Hantuchova.

Once again, though Sharapova and Henin are a good team, they aren't able to play well wehn it really counts, against the top seeds, though the match isn't over yet. They made a good comeback though, going under 0-3 and coming back 3-3, only to lose 3 games in a row. Really good play from the russians though, Kournikova's allround game is really helping her, now she can actually keep serve! :p

Wow, this match really seemed over, but amazingly Henin ahd SHarapova made a great comeback! Again, they went down 0-3. Myskina and Sharapova were really playing well, getting in the groove, piling game on top of game. Henin and Sharapova were able to break back and catch up to their opponents on 3-3, to then take the set 6-4 on Sharapova's great serve.

An amazing win for Justine and Maria, who really fought hard to win thid match. Anastasia and Anna really wasted ALOT of opportunities, going up 3-1, then 4-3, but just weren't able to take advantage and finally succumbed to their opponents. A great match for the russian and the belgian, and a pity for the russians, who, unless Dell'Acqua/Hantuchova lose in the semifinal, will not be seeded 1st in next weeks grand slam.

:singer: GAME AND FIRST SET HANTUCHOVA, 7-5 :singer:

A really battled first set between the 2 players, both kept their serve, then exchanged breaks once, and then held serve again all the way to 5-5. The first 10 games were great to watch, you could tell that both players were putting 110% into every single shot they hit, and the rallies were simply amazing, hard, flat shots sizzling just centimetres over the net, and the winners/unforced errors ratio was incredible for a match like this. But on 5-5, Justine started really playing sloppy, flopping 3 forehand into the net on her own serve, and playing an extremely bad game on Hantuchova's serve when she closed out the match.

:singer: GAME SET AND MATCH, HANTUCHOVA, 7-5 7-5 :singer:

That second set was really , first, Henin taking a big lead, 3-0, followed by 5 games in a row by hantuchova, really letting the groundstrokes rip, while as up till 0-3 she really looked hesitant to go for her shots. So, with Daniela leading 5-3, she really started to choke, you could almost see her heart racing, she lost rythm on her serve, and Henin promptly took advantage to take 2 games, so everyrything tied at 5-5, but Daniela was able to regroup and just play percentage tennis, keeping the ball in and waiting for an error. Congratulations Daniela on your first final!

After a bit of a slow start, the top seeds really dominated the rest of the set, Sprem and Dementieva really looked lost, they don't have much going on, no high fives, no talking between the players, no strategies being made, just bad doubles play from them. As for the aussie and the slovakian, well, there's a reason for which they are the number 1 seeds.
