PARIS DAY 2 REVIEW

4 seeds fall, all other seeds proceed to Quarter Finals

Quite an exciting day in Paris, full of surpirses and un-expected results. A day where 4 seeds fell, and no players, not even the top seed Marrero had an easy match. Everyone except Tatiana Perebynis, who had an easy victory against the russian Anna Kournikova.

This was Tatiana's first match on Tour, and though Anna has been finding a bit of form in singles the last 2 weeks, her speciality still remains doubles, as her and partner Myskina clenched the title last week.
Kournikova really seems to have revised her game, not depending only on volleys anymore, but showing that she is quite a fighter from the back of the court, and her ground strokes were superior to Tatiana's in almost all the rallies: but Perebynis often came to the net and was able to close out points. Not the best of losses for Anna, but at least now she seems to have a more well rounded style of play, and that will for sure help her get better results in the weeks to come, and she can hope in having a good results next week at the Australian Open.
As for Perebynis, getting to the Quarterfinals in her first tournament is really something, and she also may be able to cause an upset next week.

In other matches, top seed Marta Marrero lost the first set to come back and beat Sprem 4-6 6-1 6-1, in what was a feisty first set, but quite lop-sided 2nd and 3rd set.
Sprem is a player who has been slumping lately, who has been having a hard time just winning any match, and seeing her take off the first set off the top seed was quite a surprise. But the higher experience of Marta in the end prevailed, finding the right strategy and concentration to take the last 2 sets.

Another seed to advance was Venus Williams, but boy did she have to fight for it. Chanda Rubin has yet to win a match on the WTA Tour, and all the matches she's played till now were pretty bad, 6-0 6-1, 6-2 6-2, and so on. So Venus, like any player would have done, went into the the match totally underestimating her opponent. But then Boom, she went down right away 2-6, with Rubin dominating rallies thanks to her forehand and coming into the net on every occasion.
Venus was able to win the 2nd set 6-4, saving many break points, mostly thanks to her higher number of match played and better experience, but Rubin was anything but ready to give up. The third set wasn't a battle, it was a war. All players on the outer courts could hear grunts and screams coming from the Center Court, and the cheer errupting in applause very often.
Players exchanged breaks at the beginning of the set, but then served all the way till 5-5, when Rubin was leading 40-15 on her service game. Rubin then hit double fault, followed by a long rally won by Venus, followed by an extended fist pump, and 2 unforced errors from the lower ranked of the 2 players.
Venus then had the chance to serve for the match, and she did so succesfully. A great match with a good ending, and Rubin probably wasn't able to bring the match to a tie break due to her lower experience level.

3rd seed Justine Henin Hardenne also advanced, but she was another player to have a hard time, posting a victory over the feisty Casey Dell'Acqua, by 6-0 5-7 7-5, in what was a great match, apart from the first set that is, which was completely dominated by the belgian. Dell'Acqua gave everyrthing she had in the 2nd and third set, and was really lose to victory, leading 5-4 and serving in the third set, but Justine, after 2 weeks of first round losses, was able to come out and live up to her 3rd seed.

Daniela Hantuchova has been really lifting up her level of play in the last 2 weeks, last week posting a victory over 5th seed Na Li, but wasn't able to win her next match.
Today's victory for her was even more important, beating the number 2 player in thw world, Sharapova, in 3 very fought sets. Hantuchova won the first set just barely, 7-5, showing that she really has what it takes to play with the top girls. But she got quite distracted in the second set, she probably relaxed a bit too much, and Sharapova didnt forgive her for that, taking the second set dropping only 1 game. Into the third set, Hantuchova going up a break 1-0, when Sharapova was able to get the break back and then break  and go up 3-1. Then believe it or not, Hantuchova took 5 games on the run :bolt: putting an end to the match and Sharapova's run in this tournament.

Other surprise on court today was the victory of Wild Card isrealian, Shahar Peer, over indoor specialist Tatiana Golovin. This was of course only Shahar's second match of her career, after winning the first round, and what a victory it was, considering that this isn't her favourite surface, and she was playing against the 5th seed. She almost look like a veteran out there: never losing concentration, and she didn't lose the second set in her 6-1 6-7 6-4 for her fault, but just because Golovin picked up her level of play.
