Preview

Sydney

At the tour's first second tier event we have 8 players represented by 8 different countries. Here is a preview for your first round matches.

Elena Dementieva vs Amelie Mauresmo

Neither player likes playing on the hardcourts, but that makes this draw lucky for one of them. Whoever can emerge the victor here will enjoy a chance to not only play on in the tournament but also play the Tokyo-Antwerp playoffs.

Michaella Krajicek vs Agnieszka Radwanska

Michaella is the favorite to win this match as a hardcourter but Agnieszka beat Michaella in the Grand Playoff and the extra benefit may not be enough if Agnieszka just plays a better game.

Tamraine Tanasugarn vs Venus Williams

Both players would like to do well on their better surface. Venus has already set up a new gameplan for Sydney. If Tamarine doesn't she won't get to use all of her 95 points which would be a real brainlapse for her coach.

Jie Zheng vs Nicole Vaidisova

Nicole is the favorite to pull through this match and Jie was the last to enter into Sydney but I wouldn't underestimate Zheng, her coach also coaches Na Li, the grand playoff champion.

The Australian Open

Lucie Safarova vs Elena Baltacha

Neither players likes hardcourts which is good for one of them. This is a great oppurtunity. If they can collect lots of points on their weaker surface they will make an even bigger push up the rankings when the variety season comes.

Na Li vs Martina Hingis

Na Li is definately the favorite. She beat Hingis in Seattle, likes hardcourts and was #1 at the Grand Playoff. She is the favorite going into the Australian Open.

Marta Domachowska vs Svetlana Kuznetsova

Both like hardcourts, But Marta was the victor in Seattle and Svetlana was the last one entered here so Marta is the favorite.

Lindsay Davenport vs Katarina Srebotnik

Katarina doesn't like hardcourts, and Lindsay is already taken to the practice courts with her hardcourt advantage. She'll be tough to beat, but Katarina's coach knows how to get an upset on this tour.

Elena and Lucie had similar gamestyles, but Baltacha was tough at the end of the second set. Lucie went away in the second, and Elena continues her good form from the Grand Playoff.

Martina gets a great win over Na Li. Na didn't take advantage of her hardcourt abilities which is a real shame, Martina moves on to face Baltacha.

Marta Domachowska def. Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4,7-6(7)*

A really high quality match, Svetlana's last minute game change gave her a good chance in the second set, but Marta came through. Marta is currently the favorite to win the title, as Elena and Martina both are variety players.

Elena played some awful tennis at the beginning of the match, and Amelie just kept the ball in play, but after that Elena really picked up her game, Amelie kept waiting for the error but it never came. Finally in the third Amelie picked her game up too and closed it out deep in the third.

Krajicek's slump continues from the Grand Playoff. Radwanska was always just a bit better than Michaella. Not a good day for Krajicek's coach, but a real great day for Agnieszka's. they are 0-2 and 2-0 respectively.
