Hi everybody

Ive been a massive Arantxa fan and always enjoy watching her play!

This year has been so diappointing for her though, I mean her Slam and hardcourt performances were not solid at all, and there were too many inexplicable losses....

I personally think that her forehand needs to shape up a bit, as I think she looks really fit, especially for someone who is gona be hitting 30 and looks much better than some of the other players!

Question is.....can she ever be back in the Top 10 ever again?

She has beaten many of the power hitters before and her backhand is especially good!
I'd like to think that she will be back in the Top 10 (I mean Amelie only does well for a small part of the year) so she could replace her

And Jelena has played 28 tournys this year, so she has got a lot of defending to do....

Plus Arantxa does not have many points to defend next year, except her 2 titles (whose points value will decrease under the new system)

Wat can Arantxa do to get her game back up there....she doesnt look as though she is ready to retire!

Arantxa looked really promising at the beginning of the year, winning 2 titles and beating her long time nemesis Martina Hingis for the first time in 5 years! Then from the French Open to the U.S. Open Arantxa has had some major trouble. The U.S. Open wasn't a bad performance though. Then after the hardcourt season she reached the final of Tokyo (losing to Dokic again) including a win over Sandrine Testud. And of course, she actually has won her first indoor match since 1997 so her indoor season was a little much more successfull.

Anyway I think it's still incrdible that Arantxa hasn't fallen out of the top 20 yet, but like herself said, she still has many more years left in her. I agree that she needs to get that forehand back on track though. Maybe she can learn to use it as more of a weapon and flatten it out more. The rest of her game is just a fine though. But I would definitely like to see a repeat of her performance again Hingis at Charleston. That was an INCREDIBLE match. VAMOS!!!!

I don;t no 2001 was a bad year for her ecen though she won 2 titles!I personally don't think her game is gonna withstand all this power these days so i don't think she'll be around for long.

I hope she stays for a while as shes always good to watch!

Sanchez should concentrate on peaking for the French Open. At this stage it's a realistic goal. 4 French Opens puts her past a lot of women-including Seles. Outside of clay her chances of winning another slam are zip, but i'd say she can still win Roland Garros.

3 important things to note:
1) Arantxa beat Hinigs at Amelia Island, not Charleston.
2) Arantxa was in the top 10 twice this year (after both victories in Porto (no other touraments that week) and Madrid (only one small event and she lost the points from RG the following week))
3) Welcome DEE!

I doubt that Arantxa will ever win another grand slam or even a tier I. The women's game has so much depth that it is getting harder and harder to even win the smallest of touraments!

I think the only thing Arantxa was really lacking was her confidence. Once she gets matches under her belt, I think she will start to believe in herself more again and stay top 20 for sure. I honestly still believe a low top 10 spot is even possible considering she's got plenty of room to gain points all year basically. The forehand was really the thing that killed her this year, it just went off too many times, and at too many crucial moments. In matches against many players, Arantxa had her chances, but could take them, and I think gaining confidence will change that. I don't think a tier 1 is out of the question still, especially clay, because she is still one of the best clay court players in my opinion. As for slams, who knows about Roland Garros, it's hard to ever rule out her chances there, so although it's rare, you never know. (Though an Aus or Wimbledon title would be nice ). I'd like to see her attack the net a bit more really, she's got solid volleys, and I felt that against Tauziat at Munich, and even Kim, she showed that she can play a more aggressive game when necessary. She's going to have to take more risks these days, and I hope that she will use her great volleying abilities to her advantage in 2002.

This was a tough year for Arantxa both on and off the court but she should bounce back given that she's not defending many points and her personal house should get back in order. I think she played too many tournaments leading up to the French Open and burnt out when she should have been peaking. I don't think playing doubles with Martina this year helped either. Maybe Arantxa's game can use a little mixing it up. Not so much defensive play, but attack more like she did in her win against Martina. The gal's wheels are still in shape so I see Arantxa giving us a couple of more years on the tour.

BTW, what happened to Jonathan (ASV_Fan) from the Sanex Board ?

Hey everybody (and thanx for the welcome ASV)

Oh definitely......Arantxa is I feel the best clay courter around....much better than Jennifer, Kim, Conchita as she was born and bred on it!

I really think its just her forehand, her movement is great, her game is much more better, her volleys, her slice, her serve has also beefed up a bit and she is going more for aces.....it really is that forehand!

I saw her play against Hingis and wowee, what a solid performance!

I just think maybe she could hit the ball a bit harder as well, as she is not a weak woman and looks like she has some untapped power in her!

Arantxa, please come to this message board and read these suggestions......and kick sum butt please!

Go Arantxa!!

The answer is so easy!!!!!!
Although I'm a Conchi supporter I'm sure she and Conchi will do this year extremely well, some surpraises for Williams sisters, Davenport, and Henin will be sure, and others over Dementieva, Testud and Farina ( but I think some of these won't be supraise at all!!!!!!!)

Its really welcome to THIS board dee. She/hes been on Sanex forever it seems like. (BTW: IM NEARING MY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY ON SANEX! 1500+ POSTS! NEVER THOUGHT THAT WOULD HAPPEN!) But, 'another Arantxa fan' is a bit too disgraceful to Dee. Should be 'another Arantxa fanatic' or something along that sort.

Arantxa is on the slide, she's a fighter and in my opinion had about as good a year as can be expected from her. The new generation of power players has made winning a lot harder for Arantxa, hence all the losses to lower ranked players that hit hard!

I think Arantxa might be able to hold onto a top 20 ranking just like she has this year. She might spend a bit of time in the top 15 but it will only be temporary. I don't think she will end the year there.

I hope this girl will play for, at least, couple of more years... but I don't see her in the top 10. She'll manage to stay in top20, but the competition is just too tough... and ASV is not getting any younger.

Anyhow, good luck Arantxa in 2002! If you prove me wrong, I'll be glad to eat my words

Arantxa fanatic alrite.....I just want her to do well, leave on a high note.....I mean she was a former world number 1....

I hope she's doin sumthin over this rest period with her forehand and her game!

I think she has got the quality game and potential to do well again.its just making it click together and getting some of that confidence back (I mean when she plays Venus or Lindsay it always seems to go to 3 sets!!)

I hope 2002 kicks of well for her!

VAMOS baby!!

Aranxta is always a threat to win RG, but lets not forget she had personal problems this year so maybe 2002 will be better for her.
