Re: W60 Wiesbaden (GER) 2019 | Apr 29 (Qualifying Draw)

After winning her first quali round this morning, Eléonora Molinaro just started her QR2 against Ipek Soylu.

I don't understand why they play the entire qualification in one day. Couldn't they have started on Sunday?

IMHO, at a W60 tournament, there should be fairer playing conditions, with the possibility to recuperate overnight from a long match. (This is the planned schedule, not due to a rain delay).

It's not allowed to start before Monday under this year's rules.

They could have had two qualifying rounds over two days, but some events prefer to have both qualifying rounds on Monday and give qualifiers one off day. There are match tie-break in qualifying matches to keep matches shorter.

A bit of controversy in this Soylu-Molinaro match. Soylu 7-6 5-6 *15-0, hits a winner, but a ball came from another court, debatable whether Mol would have got it, probably not, but the ref called let, which seemed right, but Soylu was furious. Then hit another apparent winner, but was then ruled out on inspection and then lost the next 3 points.

Into a MTB. Big match for both.

Greta lost 2-6, 3-6.
Gotta give kudos to Soylu, she was rock solid today. Greta was more of an UE machine from the very start.

Doesnt look like Soylu should be ranked where she is ranked. Anybody knows why she had such a substantial drop from her career high?

Re: W60 Wiesbaden (GER) 2019 | Apr 29 (Draws)

Eléonora Molinaro beat Ipek Soylu 10/7 in the match tiebreak.

It's her first time in a main draw of a tournament higher than $25K.

Talked to Molinaro after the match. She said (and it really looked like it) that her opponent was very unfair, no fair play at all from her. It was CLEAR that the ball came from the other court during the point and she said that the ref didnt see it first but then decided LET - the only correct decision of course. Soylu was furious but without reason. It was a clear decision. She discussed many decisions, hated her behaviour really. Well deserved win for Molinaro.

I was dipping in and out of the first set and then started properly watching from midway through the second set, didn't really see anything too bad from Soylu in the time I was watching. I'm like GSMR, I like both players so didn't really mind who won. Regarding the talking point, there's no doubt at all that the additional ball came into play before the winner landed, so therefore it has to be a let, but it was extremely unfortunate for Ipek because I'm pretty certain Molinaro wouldn't have got to it and it was such a big point - 30-0 at that stage is obviously massively different to 15-15, and the umpire initially missing it certainly didn't make Ipek feel any better. The correction on the following point was just rubbing salt into the wound, ha.

Probably a bigger match for Ipek giving she is 23/24 now and 350+ places off her career high after an absolute nightmare 18 months or so, but great opportunity for Molinaro and it'll be interesting to see where she lands in the main draw. She gave a trademark scream of delight after match point
