I've said before that I don't know why so many people diss him. It's his job to express his opinion, and he does it fairly wittily with pretty decent insight. He needs to cut down on the damn basketball references (stick to the sport in hand!) but his column's not a bad read. It only really seems to be hardcore Seles fans who detest him - merely because he doesn't pick her to win every title going. It's not such an outlandish opinion. And if she proves him wrong, well good for her. I'm sure we've all been proved wrong before.

Anyway, very good article on differences in attitude toward smen and women. Next time we pounce on Hingis for glaring, we might like to remember how much the men get away with.

Yep, what Marat was saying in Russian during his match vs Sampras was incredibly obscene. LOL. Russians have the advantage of being able to swear on court all they want. Kafelnikov was swearing badly after every single lost point against Alex Kim. But Marat was outdoing Yevgeny swearing with extreme virtuosity and dirtiness. It is not pathetic English language where all you have is a miserable combination of 1.5 obscene words. Russian language is really powerfull..:)

Wertheim has a great vocabulary range, and is witty and thought-out to boot. But he picks Venus Williams to win EVERYTHING, including the Australian Open  and Roland Garros  . Not to mention that he seldom says nice things about Monica (first-round loss, never will win another Slam) or Martina (never again will be a top player, hasn't won a GS in x years, doubles specialist), yet when Serena reached a GS final for the first time in years, he called her the best player on earth - next to Venus, of course.

He's not horrible, but he obviously has bias.

They all have biases (unlike us ;)). I can live with that, and every now and then he has some interesting insight.

What makes me nutty about Wertheim is that he'll diss the women's tour with inaccurate information and assumptions and refuse to even reconsider his position let alone recant when proven wrong (prime example, when he claimed that a slam singles win by a woman other than a top 5 seed would "as rare as a Mickey Mantle rookie card" - a concept that was refuted ad nauseum by a large number of fans armed with actual stats) He literally emailed me back once saying that while, yes, what he said was wrong and off base he was trying to make a point...

He has a habit of opening his mouth at all the wrong times. Seles' recent victory comes to mind (oh, the justice! :D ). I remember last year, Capriati made a comment about beating the top players, and Wertheim said "yea right. If she can get the ball in play, I still wouldn't give her a chance bla bla bla". A week later, who wins Australia? :p

So ironic...

I (as a hard-core Seles fan) don't hate the guy.
But he does annoy me.
The problem is, first of all, he seems to be the only full-time tennis correspondent for a national publication.
And it seems like for the last year or so every other week he's run a letter from someone asking if Seles will win another slam and he runs one variation or another saying she's not a contender, there's no way in hell she'll ever win another slam, she's not in the same category as Clijsters or Capriati. (He said at the end of last season)
Fine, that's what he believes, I think virtually every "expert" feels the same, but does he have it to repeat it ad nauseum, in such insulting ways? I'm sure he doesn't publish every letter he gets. Is it really worth his time to dismiss Monica time and time again. When in fact the example of Capriati show you that can't make such categorical statements. Anything can happen in sport.
(Plus Monica had a winning record against both Clijsters and Capriati last year)
(And of course now that there's a bandwagon he's jumping on it!!)
