VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- Venus Williams withdrew from next week's Generali Ladies tournament in Linz because of an irritated left wrist.

This would have been her first tournament abroad since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. She had pulled out of the Kremlin Cup last month in Moscow because of security concerns.

``I was getting ready for the tournament and hurt my wrist during practice,'' Williams said. ``I'm very disappointed and frustrated to be missing Linz.''

She plans to stay home and treat her wrist to be ready for the Sanex Championships in Munich, Germany. The Oct. 30-Nov. 4 event features the top 16 women's singles players.

Williams had been seeded second in Linz. Belgium's Justine Henin now moves into that spot. Lindsay Davenport, the defending champion, is seeded first. She beat Williams 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in last year's Linz final.

Davenport won in Zurich, Switzerland, on Sunday, beating Jelena Dokic in the final. Dokic is seeded third at the Generali.

Other seeded players are Nathalie Tauziat of France, Elena Dementieva of Russia, Sandrine Testud of France, Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain.
