Thats IF Venus happens to be consistent on the day ... you forget - even on the clay, every time Lindsay gets a ball in it will have been smacked very hard... plus the fact that Venus tends to be inconsistent on the clay as she doesn't feel as powerful.... i don't think Venus is a confident on the clay.... IMO Lindsay doesn't seem as affected mentally.... Thats why i think Lindsay would prevail
Venus because she can beat her on Hard and Grass and with clay being Lindsay's worse surface then Venus would most likely prevail there too. They both hit with pace and therefore they will both make errors so in that area they would be even.
Venus is quicker than Lindsay and has a better slot selection. She has won a few clay events and imho has much better wingspan and movement than Lindsay.

I pick Davenport, and not because my name is big Lindsay. The thing that I think most of you are forgeting is that Davenport has been losing to Venus mainly because she cannot return the serve of Venus effectively. This allows Venus to get the upperhand when she is serving.
The clay would be an equalizer for Lindsday in that situation. The serve will come over slower, and with less velocity. Clay may not be Lindsay's best surface, but she can play on it. Lindsay would also have more time to reach Venus's shots, plus it would be easier for Lindsay to wrong foot Venus on clay.
Venus is very quick off the mark, which means she will be sliding when she has to stop. Lindsay is not as explosive on the take off, which would help her in that situation. Hopefully we will see in 2002, I would really enjoy watching my two of my four favs (Davenport, Pierce & the Williams sisters) competing against each other.
I disagree with you Biglindsay because It isn't the service game being more effective because they both have great serves.. it is the return game. Venus has upped her return game that is one of the reasons why she has been beating her lately. Imho clay is slower and you need fitness and MOVEMENT and stamina and Venus clearly has the edge. Venus is the better all around althete.
Hi Dawn
Well look at it this way. Venus does not seem to have nearly as much trouble returning Lindsay's serve, as Lindsay does Venus's serve ( Serena too for that matter) anything that takes the sting off of Venus's shots/ serves is a plus.
i was going to say venus before looking at the posts
but big lindsay's argument makes sense
just like i dont agree when people say martina should win on clay because it neutralises the harder shots. on clay, martina's shots become even more vulnerable
i also vaguely remember lindsay reaching the SF of RG before while Venus' best result is a QF
IMHO I think Venus has a best all-court game than Lindsay, so she has an advantage on clay. She has better speed and stamina, which are basic elements for a good clay player. Venus does have it more than Lindsay, that's why I think she would prevail in three sets
It's a very tough call - I think that Lindsay's groundstrokes are cleaner and on a slower court with the aforementioned mild slowing down on Venus' serve she would have an even better chance than she has usually.
However, it always amazes me how easily Venus has despatched Lindsay in recent times, which makes me think that there is a strong mental factor in their matches. Unfortunately, playing on clay would not affect that.
QUEENLINDSAY - Using all caps as an indi ation of shouting is a pretty standard intenet protocol. Williams_Rulez merely reminds you of that. It most assuredly isn't Williams_Rulez 'feeling guilty'. Then again, if you happen to just be a very angry person, I can understand why you'd use all caps in all your posts. In fact, even denying its rude makes a certain wierd sense if you really have anger issues and want to lash out at people for no reason.
Okay, never mind, it's cool. You've just got stuff to work out.
I keep hearing that Lindsays shots would be cleaner because she has more time to setup. Lindsay like the surefooting of a hardcourt not the sliding of clay. The sliding will not allow her to set up for her shots as cleanly as she would like, because she will be hitting most of her shot off balance. You also have to remember that on clay after hitting the ball you continue to slide in the direction that you were moving previously (inertia). That works against lindsay because she can not get back to the center of the court as quickly as she would like.
So I would vote for Venus because as many past champions have said movement on a clay court is very important.
