What Happened??????

Venus SHOULD have won RG that year. And me thinks she would have won each major after that.
She had 2 match points if I remember correctly (from what I heard, unfortunately I wasnt into tennis at all at the time)

In 1999 Venus did have match points, I think it was 2. I remember that match and although Venus was not on the top of her game, that would usually be enough to beat most players but that day Schwartz was just playing the match of her life. She also played great to almost beat Monica at the US Open last year. When Barbara Schwartz is 'on' she is a really great shot maker. It is a shame she has been injured so often. As for 2001 against Schett, I think Venus made a LOT of unforced errors and just had a bad day rather than Babsi playing great.

Both times she underestimated her opponents and that coupled with a lack of self belief on the clay led to defeat.

I didn't see the 99 match, but I bet anything Hingis was VERY happy when Babsi took out Venus. It would have been a Venus-Hingis quarter.

In 2001, Venus made A LOT of errors--but Babsi played a GREAT match. I still believe that Schett would have beaten anyone that day...it was just luck of the draw that Venus had her in the draw.

Schwartz's backhand that day started to be on fire in second set, it's the best one handed backhand I'd ever seen until that day, it was as Henin's current backhand, she was hitting it from everywhere and winning points... Venus got the match in her hand but somehow she couldn't finish it.
Totally different to Schett's match, where Barbara wasn't totally dominated as Schwartz was.

I saw teh 99 match against Schwartz. I have no idea how Venus lost that match. I think she wasnt as focused back then. She was actually the favorite going into Roland Garros. She sure can play a good game on clay. The match with Schwartz was a good one. Venus was kinda young and pretty much thought she had teh title in the bag. She really is that good on clay despite what her critics think. I think had she beaten schwartz we might have seen a better Venus much sooner. See what Wining WImbledon did for her. i would have loved to see Steffi/Venus final. Venus sure had her chances to win majors thats for sure.
