Venus To Open Fed Cup Tie Against Bedanova

Venus Williams By Tennis Week
04/26/2003

The United States begins its quest for the Fed Cup title it last won in 2000 tomorrow as Olympic gold medallist Venus Williams takes on Daja Bedanova in the opening match of the first-round Fed Cup tie between the host U.S. and the Czech Republic at the Paul E. Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Massachusetts.

The first match begins at 1 p.m. Saturday's second match features top-ranked Serena Williams vs. Iveta Benesova.

In Sunday's reverse singles, Serena Williams is scheduled to play Daja Bedanova followed by Venus vs. Benesova. The Williams sisters are scheduled to close out the tie in a doubles match against the Czech Republic team of Klara Koukalova and Eva Birnerova.

This will be the first time the Williams sisters have played Fed Cup since the 1999 final in Stanford, Calif., where the United States beat Russia, 4-1. In fact, the Williams sisters have played Fed Cup only twice overall. They made their debut in the 1999 semifinals against Italy, where they became the first sister duo to play for the United States on the same Fed Cup team. Jeanne and Chris Evert were the first sisters to play on U.S. Fed Cup teams, but they did so separately.

Meghann Shaughnessy and Alexandra Stevenson join Serena and Venus on an American squad that owns a record 17 Fed Cup championships and is intent on capturing the Cup again.

"Our American women are team players and prouder than ever to represent the United States," said U.S. Fed Cup captain Billie Jean King. "I am confident we will field one of the most competitive teams and we look forward to beginning our quest for the Fed Cup in Lowell."

Sixteen nations are seeking the 2003 Fed Cup title. The winner of the U.S.-Czech Republic tie will advance to the round of eight, July 19-20th, to face the winner of the Sweden-Italy tie. The round of eight winners will then advance to the final four Fed Cup World Finals in November.

just wondering..
but if they're already qualified for Olympics
after this tie, does it mean
they probably wont be playing any Fed Cup
matches after this tie?
