No Venus in New York

Venus Williams won't be coming to the U.S. Open this year.

The two-time U.S. Open champ and No. 4 seed will miss the Open due to a groin pull which hinders her mobility. More on this story soon.

It's true!

It certainly does say that at the site. :(
But it's not appearing anywhere else like espn.com or on Cnnsi.com or any other sites that google brings up concerning Venus. :)

I don't think that is true. BBC just posted the following article in their website:
Venus struggling for fitness

Venus has not played since losing to her sister in the Wimbledon final
Venus Williams admits she is "not 100%" going into next week's US Open but is determined to continue her family's successful run at Flushing Meadows.
With her sister Serena unable to defend her title due to injury it will be left to Venus to try and secure a fifth straight US Open title for the Williams family.

But the number four seed continues to be hampered by the abdominal injury that ruined her chances of making the Wimbledon final against Serena a competitive affair.

"I'm not really 100% at this point, but I think I have a really good chance at the Open no matter what the circumstances are," said Venus.

"So, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that everything will be ok.

"It's been four years since Williams has been on the trophy at the US Open and it has really been a dream come true.

"When I hold it up I see the S, the V, the V, the S, and it's what we dreamed about, so dreams are coming true."

Serena won her first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows in 1999 and regained the title last year after Venus won in 2000 and 2001.

And Venus is hopeful that her younger sister will be in New York to lend her support.

"Yeah, she definitely wants to come," said Venus.

"She told me she's going to be there in the stands, and I definitely need her her and my family to get some support, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed there, too."

Not much news.......its a joke?

NEW YORK (AFP) - Former US Open champion Marat Safin of Russia withdrew from the final Grand Slam tournament of the year due to a wrist injury.

Guillermo Canas of Argentina also withdrew following wrist surgery.

Canas was to play third seed Juan Carlos Ferrero - the French Open champion - in the first round.

The US Open gets under way at the National Tennis Center on Monday.

Safin would have been the 26th seed, but he hasn't played in more than a month because of the injury.

The 23-year-old Russian has appeared in only nine tournaments this season, posting a 12-7 match record.

Most recently slowed by back and knee problems, Safin claimed his only Grand Slam title at the 2000 US Open, defeating Pete Sampras in straight sets in the final. He reached the semi-finals in 2001.

Safin has 11 career ATP titles.

Canas has appeared in only two events this year, none since the Australian Open . The 25-year-old has never gotten out of the second round in three US Open appearances.

Why is the article on the site post dated to the 24th of August??
That is interesting, but I think it's just a type-o. They do print accurate information the fastest, and sometimes you see spelling and typing errors on their site.

I'll go with a live announcement by either Pam or Mary Jo.

it does seem weird the date is wrong, but the site seems suspicious.

i think the person got mixed up in his hurry to put this up on the site. the "more on it" sounds like he's in a hurry to source out more info.

but it could be just a rumour

it really is. it's as if they (tennisweek) are anticipating it and want to be the first to break the story.
