good on her-must be serious!

Great field- hope no last minute w'ds

Venus enters Thalgo tourney
Wednesday, 21 November, 2001

GOLD COAST, Qld - Two-time Wimbledon and US Open champion Venus Williams and 2001 Wimbledon finalist and World No.7, Justine Henin (BEL), will headline a top-class international field at the 2002 Thalgo Australian Women's Hardcourts on the Gold Coast, Tournament Director Liz Smylie announced today.

"Some of the greatest players in the women's game today will be coming to the Gold Coast to begin their 2002 campaigns," Smylie said. "This year, Williams is undoubtedly one of the strongest players on the circuit with Henin following close behind. Combined with a host of other top players, next year's tournament is going to be a fantastic event, which is not to be missed."

In what is shaping up to be one of the most evenly matched line-ups in the tournament's history, the field also includes Frenchwoman Sandrine Testud [ranked No.11], American Meghann Shaughnessy [ranked No.12], last year's Thalgo Australian Women's Hardcourts finalist, Italy's Silvia Farina Elia [14], rising Czech star, Daja Bedanova [28], and Russian hotshot, Elena Likho

Okay, now that I've gotten off of my initial shock, time to WOWIE! Venus means serious business next year if she's committing to Gold Coast. Grrrr, now I want to go to Gold Coast! This is pretty shocking stuff. I hope she's healthy enough to play! Watch No. 1 ranking, Venus is on the warpath!

Simmer down

Its not as is Venus does not play the occasional Tier III. It is not as if Lindsay Davenport entred a Tier III. It is not a big, shocking deal. Surely, Venus is afraid of playing Serena. It's clear and sad, frankly.

Justin, its VERY RARE to see Venus Williams in a TIER III tourney. And I think Venus is not afraid to play Serena. Venus might play both Gold Coast and Addidas. Venus wants match play becuase she doesn't want to lose 6/1 6/1 againand wants to be better prepared unlike last year!

I think it is great and no shock
Serena and Venus rarley play the same event and both need a warm up event before the OZ Open.
If serena has entered Syd Venus would prob want to go there rather than Can or Hob. I reckon Ser and Ven will play doubles in GC and Syd and ven will play sing in GC and not Syd and Ser singles in Syd

Go Venus I pray you stay healthy this on coming season and I wish you to get that #1 rank girlfriend

This is great news and I am happy. It is always nice to hear good news during the hiatus of tennis playing.

Justin thank you for giving props to Serena.. I really do think Serena is aiming HIGH next season.

Still, neither Williams signed up for a Tier III last year.

I guess this means that Venus isn't playing singles at Sydney. And it is so she wouldn't have to play Serena (what other reason could there be?). Aside from the Slams and the two Tier I North American tournaments (Indian Wells and Miami/Key Biscayne) I can't name another tournament that they both participated in singles in.

Hmm...a possible Venus vs. Justine match on Rebound Ace. Hmm...

I'm still surprised that she signed up for it and I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't show up. If she sticks to it it will show that she's pretty dedicated to winning the Oz Open.

Too bad for Justine, I think she wanted to win those two tournaments in the beginning of the year again.
But may be Venus wants to try an other preparation for the Aussie Open?

This is GREAT news Venus has been sidelined since her U.S. Open win in September. It's great to know that we'll be able to see her in action at the first tournament of the new year! Perhaps Venus really wants to get herself ready for the Australian open...something she hasn't really done before.

This is GREAT news for Justine!!!!

Just think of all those lovely bonus points when she beats Venus in the final.

Ever the optimist, me. Not at all beyond the realms of possiblity.

I was hoping Jennifer would start the year here instead of the pointless Hong Kong exhibition so that she could start defending her massive Aussie Open points as early as possible. Oh well.

excellent! Very sensible of her, seeing as she's been out since the US Open, and must have nasty memories of that 6-1, 6-1 thrashing last year... I agree, she'll probably play singles here and Serena will play Sydney.

great for the tournament, but dont go on about her entering a tier 3 tourny - the oz warmup events traditionally get the big names who want to do well in melbourne.

OMG! OMG! OMG!

I think Venus has scheduled to this tournament due to two main reasons. First of all, she wants people to stop talking about her lack of play on the tour, her invented injuries, subjects we are all tired to talk about. Second of all, she wants to get some court time (matches) before the Australian Open, she is maybe thinking seriously to do some damage Down Under and being #1, because Venus playing a Tier III is so very much rare. She doesn't even If she doesn't play adidas cause of Serena, now I would really call her a bitch.
That would be nonsense. The Williams have to stop avoiding to play each other. It's worse for everyone. They rarely commit to the same events, that's so.... well, who knows?

BOTH PLAYERS MUST PLAY ADIDAS INTERNATIONAL.

WTA is a whole shit. If I were the CEO, I'd "obligate" the players to play the top tournaments, like ATP does. If they don't,
punishment!
Just my point.
