Amid growing speculation she may be sidelined the rest of the season, Venus Williams has joined sister Serena in entering the Advanta Championships. The tournament is set for October 27th-November 2nd at the Pavilion at Vilanova University in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
The sixth-ranked Venus, who withdrew from the Kremlin Cup yesterday, is suffering from an abdominal strain that has prevented her from playing since she lost to Serena in the Wimbledon final in July. The Williams sisters are grieving the death of oldest sister Yetunde Price, who was shot to death in Compton, California on September 14th, about a mile from the public tennis courts where Venus and Serena learned to play tennis.
The Williams sisters rarely play the same tournaments outside of Grand Slams so their entry into the event into the Advanta is a coup, however it remains to be seen if the sisters will play, particularly given the current tragedy confronting the family. There is speculation that one or both sisters may not play again this season.
The 2003 Advanta Championships begin on Monday, October 27th, with the first round of main draw competition. The finals are set for Sunday, November 2nd. Tickets for the Advanta Championships are available by phone or online. Box seat ticket packages are $225-$2,000. Individual session tickets range from $10 to $60. To purchase tickets, please call 866-TENNIS-5 or visit the Advanta Championships website.
Looks like Venus and Serena are going to play a warm up for the year end championships!!!
