Venus Enters Advanta Championships

Amid growing speculation she may be sidelined the rest of the season, Venus Williams has joined sister Serena in entering the Advanta Championships. The tournament is set for October 27th-November 2nd at the Pavilion at Vilanova University in Radnor, Pennsylvania.

The sixth-ranked Venus, who withdrew from the Kremlin Cup yesterday, is suffering from an abdominal strain that has prevented her from playing since she lost to Serena in the Wimbledon final in July. The Williams sisters are grieving the death of oldest sister Yetunde Price, who was shot to death in Compton, California on September 14th, about a mile from the public tennis courts where Venus and Serena learned to play tennis.

The Williams sisters rarely play the same tournaments outside of Grand Slams so their entry into the event into the Advanta is a coup, however it remains to be seen if the sisters will play, particularly given the current tragedy confronting the family. There is speculation that one or both sisters may not play again this season.

The 2003 Advanta Championships begin on Monday, October 27th, with the first round of main draw competition. The finals are set for Sunday, November 2nd. Tickets for the Advanta Championships are available by phone or online. Box seat ticket packages are $225-$2,000. Individual session tickets range from $10 to $60. To purchase tickets, please call 866-TENNIS-5 or visit the Advanta Championships website.

pleasantly surprised!! even if in the past the sisters didn't play the same tourneys, their lives are different now, so maybe they want to be together as much as possible!

Maybe they will both come back for Philadelphia and the WTA Championships, to help each other back on to the tour and feel like they are not starting over from scratch next year.

More power to them both.

who knows if they will play or not. However given the circumstances it would have been probable that they withdrew from all remaining tournaments for the season. They did not do that so who knows?

You just may see them in philly.

people grieve in different ways. they may want to get back to something active to give them a respite.

if you had read what i said, you would know i wasn't purporting to know the thoughts of venus or serena. i was merely stating a fact.
Wow youre not very bright are you? Didn't they teach you the difference between a fact and an opinion? Go do some reading and educate yourself, kay?
