By Richard Pagliaro - Venus Williams will celebrate the New Year Down Under. The third-ranked Williams, who has not played a WTA Tour match since scoring a 6-2, 6-4 victory over sister Serena to win her second straight U.S. Open title, has committed to playing the Australian Women's Hardcourt tournament on Australia's Gold Coast, December 30-January 5th.

The addition of the two-time Wimbledon winner gives the tournament its most formidable field in history. Defending champion Justine Henin, Meghann Shaughnessy, Sandrine Testud, Silvia Farina Elia, Patty Schnyder, Iva Majoli and Rita Grande have all entered the 32-player event.

Tournament director Liz Smylie said it the event will be Williams' lone tune-up tournament for the Australian Open, which will be staged January 14-27th in Melbourne.

"Venus only plays where she wants to play and she knows we run a first-class event here," Smylie said. "She needs a lead-up tournament to the Australian Open and she wants to do it here. She could be in three or four different places — Hong Kong, Perth and Auckland are all playing around the same time."

Sister Serena Williams, who was a walkover winner over Lindsay Davenport in the Sanex Championships in Munich, Germany, is scheduled to play the Sydney International tournament later in January. With the exception of Grand Slam tournaments, the Williams sisters seldom enter the same events.

"Venus was looking for something a little different," Smylie said. "Sydney is very tough and players don't want to run the risk of going into the Australian Open with just one match under their belts — that's not to say that Venus would lose in the first round in Sydney. Whoever wins here is going to have to play some good tennis."
