Some people keep saying how people cheer against them at tournements, how there is racism in tennis, blah blah blah, but the same people say after how the ratings go down when they are not playing, that tickets don't sell when they are not playing, that they are so popular around the world.

Isn't it a contradiction, are they popular or not? Their supposed unpopularity is a myth created by a small group of Willi fans with the "playing the victim" syndrom.

They are very popular worldwide.
Wheather it be good or bad. Wheather people come to see them play, root for them, or root against them. Whether you like them or not their popularity can't be denied.

Now I know some people are going to bring up so-and-so being more popular here and there, but overall the sisters are huge draws.
They provide and awesome game, mixed with contrasting personalities,
and incredible fashion. You get a lot more than just great tennis with these young ladies and they provide a combination of dimensions that isn't present with any other players on the tour today.

Their are poeple who will never give the sisters the proper credit they deserve. And their will always be this hypocritical double standard where they are concerned. Damned if they do, damned if they don't!

Bottomline, they sell where ever they go(notice the word "sell" not always "sellout's", but they sell and provide much more and that's why sells go up when they are present). If certain people can't handle too bad. Let them argue until they are blue in the face.

so, I guess people buying tickets to see them lose is not a possibility?

you can be popular for negative reasons as well.

People want to see them though. I would love to Serena (baby, turn around and let me see that sexy body go bump bump bump).

I think some Williams fans actually want them to be unpopular. For matyrdom.

Exactly cariosity. The contradiction Da BackHand alludes to is not really there, b/c I am sure a lot of people watch the sisters to nitpick their game or to see them lose a match. Same as I would watch Tiger or Man Utd or Raptors and V Carter to see them defeated.

One thing I noticed too in this board is that the anti-fans of the sisters read their interviews more than the fans. Strange.

Well doh, then those people would have buy tickets anyway without VENUS and SERENA, because they went to see their fave. God wasn't too kind with you when he distributed common sense.

They are very popular, which is why thier "Q" ratings are so high. There are however a very vocal minority of those who dislike them for displaying qualities that they admire in justine/Capriati/Hingis/Davenport/Kim et al...go figure.
