I decided to visit the chatroom for the first time today, and probably the last!

I've been taken to task by an angry Anna Kournikova fan who think I'm spiteful in pointing out that despite having never won a Major she's the highest female earner due to her good looks.

Sorry pal!, but I'm all for beauty in the field of sport, and if you ask me, Venus Williams might well be big but she's also a very attractive woman with a great figure, gorgeous smile:D , and of course she can play tennis, which is what it's all about, funny enough.

It just so happens that how a woman looks rather than her playing ability often dictates her photographic and, hence, her earning power.:(

Earning power.

Uhhh.

I think Venus ACTUALLY earned more in endorsements and prize money in 2001 than not only Anna, but ALL women in sports.

Anna earns more than she deserves for playing, BUT not more than Venus recently.

Anna earned more in endorsements

I believe the figures for 2001 were something like:

Anna K 21.5 mil
Venus W 14 mil
Martina H 12.5 mil
Serena W 10 mil
Lindsay D 8.5 mil

Martina Navratilova made a very good point about Anna's looks. Anna isn't taking money out of anyone's pocket. People are willing to pay large dollars to take pictures of her. Is that her fault? Blame her parents if anybody. Anna's presence has helped the tour more than it's hurt it.

It's Venus and Martina and Jenn and Justine and Lindsay and Monica and Kim and Serena that keep new fans coming back to tennis. But Anna brings a huge amount of attention to the game. I have plenty of (male) freinds who don't know jack about the WTA, but they know Anna. And if they tune in to watch Anna, they see her opponent too.

But if Anna loses early again...

The thing is that Anna earns more from the total endorsement deals compared to Venus' total. But Venus holds the single largest endorsement deal in women's sports.

True, but the problem is twofold. First, Anna's off the court activities are not tennis related and are solely to sell her as a sex symbol. Case in point, her appearance in Enrique's new video. While I don't have a problem with any player have off the court activities, Anna's do very little to help her with her image as a model with a tennis racket. No, it is not Anna's fault that she is beautiful, but it is Anna's fault that she continues to use that beauty to make money without using those funds to continue to improve as a tennis player. She does not have a coach or trainer. Why? It is not because of money problems that is for sure. I don't blame her parents anymore, but I do blame Anna. She is nearly 21 years old and has been an adult for nearly three years. Anna is old enough to make her own decisions and so far, she has not made the right ones regarding her tennis career.

Yes, Anna does bring a lot of attention from males to the tennis court, which also brings attention to the game and her opponent. However, when Anna loses early, most of those fans leave with her. In addition, it hardly helps the game of tennis that one of its most famous assets cannot even win one tournament. What does that say about the game?

I'm not trying to pick on Anna here. She is lovely and very talented @ her sport. However, she really needs to make some changes before I will take her seriously as a player again.

Personally, I would be perfectly happy to see Anna get twice as much in endorsements as Venus til the end of time. As long as Venus wins a GS or two every year.

I do know that Venus received the largest endorsement contract for a female athlete in history with the $40 million plus Reebok contract. That wasn't just based soley on her performance nor based soley on her looks. She's simply extremely marketable and she wins. So I don't think it's simply looks that dictate your earning power.

Anna deserves credit too. She is good-looking, but so is Schett and the little 16-year old scantily dressed new player, and several other players-none of whom comes close to earning what Kournikova does. So beauty alone doesn't cut it. Anna is 80% looks and 20% tennis, and her game teeters on the edge of being almost good. She takes that mix along with Hingis aid at doubles and skillfully becomes a true winning bet for tournaments and advertisers alike. She may not be taking tennis lessons, but I bet she sure is taking courses on marketing. Do I take her seriously as a tennis player? Definitely not. Does Anna care? Definitely not.
