Baseline: WTA Van Uytvanck comes out about dating fellow pro

In a Belgian TV press interview, WTA pro Alison Van Uytvanck has "come out" of the proverbial closet as a lesbian.

"I don’t find it’s a taboo, [this relationship] makes me happy," Van Uytvanck reportedly said of her relationship with fellow Belgian player Greet Minnen, as translated and shared with Outsports. "Soon we are going to live together. We do feel super-happy together, and that’s what we will show to the world."

She continued: "Nobody has to justify why they are lesbian or gay. It is not a disease. We are very open about our relationship, and my parents are proud about it. That’s important because the support made us feel good."

Van Uytvanck's quite-public disclosure won't be news, per se, to her fans and other followers, with whom the 23-year-old has been crystal-clear about her affection for 20-year-old Minnen for a number of months. The flipside of that is true as well, with Minnen sharing a number of images of the two enjoying each other's company.

Among the WTA's Top 100 singles players, some others who identify as gay have made news related to that in recent months. Swedish pro Johanna Larsson came out publicly in October 2017 ahead of her first-ever showing in the WTA Finals event, that in doubles. Last week, Aussie doubles specialist Casey Dellacqua won a designation as LGBTI Sports Personality of the Year in the land Down Under.

Van Uytvanck won her second career WTA title in February, besting the field at the Budapest event and defeating No. 1 seed Dominika Cibulkova in three sets for the title.

good to see a player not shy away from their sexuality !:worship: wish a couple of top players would follow her example ,so we wouldn't have to pretend Mauresmo was the last gay #1:rolleyes:

As for Alison I think pretty much everyone knew, she was engaged with american actress Meghan Markle just months ago and was on most british tabloids.
It took me a moment to work out what you meant here

Congrats to Alison & Greet; they look very happy (been together for quite some time based on this picture's caption, too).

I love when this is treated as a non-issue. Of course only players from certain European countries can afford to give the topic this treatment, since it would most definitely not be easy for an Asian or Latin American player to simply come out like it's no big deal.

On a side note and given that this has become a "who's gay and who isn't" thread, I was happy to see Franny Schiavone shows her girlfriend on Instagram and publicly shows her relationship as well.

Good for her.

It's probably better to do it early in her career.

Btw: I know it doesn't matter and maybe it's just me - but I find her one of the most physically unatrractive of WTA players.
