Valentina is looking like she good be a good player  :yeah: Just 14 years old, and she's been making some G4 QF's.

Has dual citizenship with Aus, so hope she doesn't pull a Sacha on us though  Has been selected for the elite NZ junior tennis funding program, so there's that at least :)

In Europe atm, just lost in QF's of a G4 in Belgium.

She wins all the NZ nationals iirc  Even the 18/u ones I think? Have to check, probably the 16/u instead.

NZ has a crop of players coming up, there's Valentina and Nina Paripovich who is 15. Though Nina isn't as talented as Valentina from what I've heard. Then there is Cheng and Lewis, 17 and 16. Both show promise, Cheng made R2 at AO beating Fanny Stollar, who is actually pretty good. But then she has done nothing since then. Lewis OTOH, who must have pretty wealthy parents like Te Tai, has traveled all over, but done pretty well for herself

I'm hoping Valentina isn't poached by Tennis Australia, however getting into the targeted athletes thing will have helped and she shouldn't want for funding for a while.

She's training in Belgium with some other Kiwi kids *I think*, they mentioned it in a Tennis NZ article. Hopefully she should play some more European tournaments, not on the list for anything next week though.

I know Valya well and the predominant reason she is playing for NZL is funding related. After she won 12U nationals her father wanted large lump sums which TA wouldn't grant, so they remained with NZL. I am also not 100% if she is a complete Dual citizen. She may well be but I'm not sure. Definitely strange though that she plays for NZL, lives mainly in Australia and plays in Europe.

Her improvement is pretty ridiculous I must say. She used to be as good as Stephanie Belovukovic when Valya won 12U Nationals, both of whom were pretty bad. But she's improved out of sight recently. I didn't think she would be that good back then but she's shown that she has a bright future :)

I don't like the sound of a bit of funding being all it takes for her too switch  I hope her father isn't one of the controlling tennis parents :p

I'm pretty sure she is dual, can't remember where I read it but yeah. Maybe a Tennis NZ article.

Aus tennis has Bains, Aiava and Hon and some others coming up, so I'm hoping Ivanov stays with NZ :( The way her father just demands funds from TA to play for Aus doesn't sound good at all though. At least Sacha Jones was open about it, and didn't switch straight away.

That's nice you know her :) Have you seen her play, what is she like? Glad to hear she has improved and has a chance at being a good pro.

Australian tennis parents are really bad. Her dad was always very annoying at tournaments, talking to her in Russian between points etc. The funding drama is rumours, but wouldn't surprise me if they're true. TA weren't too keen on her it seems, but she wasn't so good then. I don't know her well because I'm more than 3 years older, but I've hit with her a lot and played her a few times. I won, but she was 12 at the time, so you can't really read much into it  Anyway, when I played her she didn't seem like a MASSIVE prospect, like no Destanee or anything. I haven't seen her since she spent more time in Europe, but she must have improved because she's beating very good players now. She used to be very mixed in her play. Would kinda bash but get nervous and start moonballing and pushing. She was very small though, so maybe now she's playing more aggressively. She's definitely better than Nina though. Saw Nina in Aus and she's not good enough to be winning the TE tournaments Valya is. I think she will probably be a good pro, but it's hard to tell and she's a year older than a lot of the girls she's playing.

My friend goes to Valya's school, so I'll ask him. She still spends a lot of time in Syd so I should be able to find out easily enough :) We just don't train in the same areas.

Yeah, the father definitely isn't patriotic Kiwi :tape: I'm not going Dawn Fraser on them, but it's worrying when the parents aren't native English speakers, and are willing to country hop just for some funding. Tbh if the rumors are true, then the father is definitely just using NZ (for now_ with it's targeted funding program, and will switch once TA comes calling

Yeah, TA was probably more interested in Aiava etc. However, with her playing decently now, she could get a look in. I hope not, but at least I'd be able to see her at AO lol.

You must be pretty good then  Do you think you could still beat her now?

I don't expect Nina to be a world beater, but they play doubles well at least.

Well, at least she seems to have variety :eek:h: I'd say she's changed, we don't need another Sasai :sobbing: Hopefully if she's based in Sydney, she comes down to Melbourne at some point and plays some Platinums (JT or AMT) Then I grab a look at her ;)

Post in the thread once you've talked to her ;)

It's a shame they fund hop. But her family are not rich by any means.

I am good, but I'm a lot older  I may beat her now. Would be close.

It is at a very inconvenient time. I have played tournaments in Estonia before, just never ITFs.

Played the Junior Fed Cup finals, unexpectedly lost in pool play but good experience :yeah:

Managed to scrape out a win against Egypt in the last round :cheer: Had a marathon doubles match to secure it...

WS1: Valentina IVANOV New Zealand - Egypt Laila ELNIMR 3-6 2-6 0-1 1:14

WS2: Nina PARIPOVICH New Zealand - Egypt Dalila SAID 3-6 7-5 6-3 1-0 2:18

WD3: Lauren ALTER New Zealand Valentina IVANOV New Zealand - Egypt Laila ELNIMR Egypt Dalila SAID 6-7(5) 7-5 7-5 1-0

Was quite an epic tie :worship: Good job by Nina, Valentina and Lauren. Even though this is Valentina's thread, Nina pushed Clare Liu to 4-6 1-6 which is quite good if you consider Liu made R64 of Pro USO :yeah: Even if Liu wasn't playing well, there's also the fact that Nina forced this tie to a doubles decider :yeah:

Liu did not make R64 at Pro USO  She made FQR  And how was Valya's loss to a Top 200 Junior player unexpected?

Oops  I just remember people saying her run was Bellis like.

Also I didn't say Nina's loss itself was unexpected, I said NZ losing before the finals was :wavey:

Something is wrong with me today, I meant Valya but typed Nina :smash:

Yes definitely, they were with USA, hosts Spain and Egypt, with only top team going to finals. Tbh it was good they beat Egypt.
