for the other players. You know that Kim, Justine, Amelie and Jennifer would rather face the sisters in later rounds than in earlier rounds, which is going to happen if they fall further in the rankings.

Now 2004 will be really interesting, especially after Wimbeldon

well, that is the bright side of things...

but players are used to that, especially with serena when she was ranked in lower than #5.. she was always the craziest dangerous floater. and venus was playing #1 tennis for a long time before she became #1...

but, yes, I see your point, seeing venus ranked #5 is really going to suck worse for other players than it does for venus..

well it's not gonna be 2 and 5 for long. Serena will fall to #3 and possibly #4 if Davenport were to win the Pilot Pen and US Open. or if Capriati wins both and then Serena misses some more tournaments post US Open where she has a tokyo title to defend. Venus will be down to 2500 or so pts after the Open so she could be surpassed by Cappy or Momo or both.

Davy won't pass Serena.

If players are playing well, their ranking isn't going to hurt them. The only way it actually stings is Venus and Serena are drawn on the same side of the draw.

It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. Venus can't have that many points to defend this fall, but Serena has some. My uninformed guess is that Serena will play this fall, but Venus will not.

If Venus is to get protected ranking she has to apply for it within the first four months of her injury.. Is that the rule?

The chances of Venus dropping to number 6 are pretty slim unless Amelie appears in the final and now that they have to redo the draw, if she is now placed in Venus' sport, she will have to possible beat Jennifer, then Justine. The only person who I see that may have a shot of pulling past Venus is Jennifer and she will have to possibly beat Amelie, then Justine, plus she will have to possibly get past Maria Sharapova.
