Anyone know who is playing next week in the French Open Main Draw Wildcard Playoff held by the USTA?

Capra and McHale for sure are playing, I've read it from a couple sources. I'm not sure who else.

I've also seen sources mentioning these two.

I assume Boserup,Hampton,Stephens and Vandeweghe and Vickery will also play.

Highly unlikely but you never know: McPhillips,Davis,Bolender
I would say these 6 probably were invited. The only exception might be Jamie... I would be very surprised if Brooke and Kyle were invited.
I hope not Bolender. That would be a waste.

McPhillips, Van Nguyen, and Min are all training for junior Fed Cup which is next weekend I believe.

Davis will probably be invited. She's awful on clay and very green when it comes to pro experience, but she's our second ranked junior (no. 17) and just had a great run at the Easter Bowl.

Goldfeld could get asked as well?
Junior Fed Cup is played in Boca April 30-May 2. Depending on the WC dates (we don't know these for sure yet do we?) it is very possible some of the Jr. Fed Cup players could participate in both?

Good call, perhaps Goldfeld as well.

Well, Gibbs played both last year and reached the final. She couldnt make one of the Fed Cup matches and they had to forfeit as Lauren Herring had to have some blood tests drawn and was deemed unplayable. That is the main reason why they didn't make finals or let alone won last year.

Side note: Is Lauren Herring related to Stanford recruit Amelia Herring??

Oh and Im guessing Gibbs, Capra, McHale, Boserup, Vickery, Goldfeld, Stephens and (possibly) Hampton

but we'll see

Just for fun, 11 girls played in the 2009 playoff:

(1) Kristie Ahn vs BYE
Stacy Tan vs Beatrice Capra
(4) Coco Vandeweghe vs BYE
Madison Keys vs Lauren Embree

Sloane Stephens vs BYE
(3) Gail Brodsky vs BYE
Nicole Gibbs vs Asia Muhammad
(2) Christina McHale vs BYE

Winner: Embree

So I think the following are pretty likely:
Capra
McHale
Vandeweghe
Stephens
Boserup

(I think it would be unfair to not invite Hampton considering her recent success and the fact that Christina is ranked 130 spots higher. Also, perhaps this event is why she pulled out of Charlottesville?)

Other possibilities (some already mentioned):
Vickery
Keys
Goldfeld
Tsay

Jr. Fed Cupper's: Min, Van Ngyuen
Turewicz
Hardebeck
Davis

(Last year 5/8 Easter Bowl QF's and were invited: Embree, McHale, Ahn, Gibbs, and Capra. The three in italics made the Semi's this year.)
Anderson (SF Easterbowl)
Asia? Gail?

 Did I miss anyone?

Hardebeck should really be invited considering she's in such good form and one the 18s Clay Court Championships this year. Why not give her a shot?

Gail Brodsky should definitely NOT be invited. This girl has done absolutely nothing since turning pro.

If they choose 11 like last year, I say McHale, Capra, Vandeweghe, Boserup, Stephens, Davis, Goldfeld, Keys, Riske, Hampton, and Hardebeck should be invited.

Vickery, Tsay, and Asia could all be good possibilities as well.

No one likes my wildcard thread :(

#14 ·
 It's not that. I think this WC opportunity deserves its own thread considering it is a playoff and competition is involved. Your thread is wildly useful and fun for US tournaments like Indian Wells, Miami, and the entire US hard court season!

#16 ·
Yeah, Asia is in Boca...should've put that in this thread lol

The participants

1. Jamie Hampton
2. Alison Riske
3. Asia Muhammad
4. Coco Vandeweghe
5. Julia Boserup
6. Beatrice Capra
7. Christina McHale
8. Sloane Stephens

Great choices!
Almost similar to AO Wildcard. Capra, Stephens and Hampton replacing Goldfeld, Min and Brengle.

Strong choices certainly. An overall stronger, and much more saturated field than last year (where 4 of the girls either went to college in the fall or are enrolling this year). However, these choices are getting pretty monotonous. I would have liked to see a few of the younger girls thrown into the mix. It would be a good experience for them --not to mention a nice reward and recognition from the USTA-- but also for the older girls, as beating someone younger and whom you are expected to beat is never an easy task. Make Asia and CoCo beat a Hardebeck first round before immediately facing the same girls they are compared to over and over.

* I wonder if Nicole Gibbs is pissed  She hasn't done much to deserve a place in this tournament but she did make the finals last year...

Jamie FTW!

I always forget how young Alexa is  It feels like she has been around for ages! But you are right, frankly Alexa is better than a lot of these girls. In fact, it was just last august that Alexa was at a career high ranking of 102. I don't think the USTA groups Alexa in with these girls,I think they view her as a much more established pro player even though currently her ranking is lower than: Mchale, Brengle (who is a 1990), and Riske. One reason I can think of is that had she been invited, she would have been the only 1989 girl and the only one who has played the MD of the French Open. But you have to remember that these events are entirely political. And the USTA trys to give these opportunities to "young" girls who they are :inlove: with.

Also, the USTA does have to make controversial decisions in these selections. They don't just go straight from rankings. Otherwise, Boserup wouldn't be playing over Goldfeld, Hsu :)confused:), Dolehide, Falconi, Cako, Ahn, Gibbs, Augustine, or Embree? And well...:tape:

1. Jamie
2. Sloane
3. Christina
4. Allison

are my top 4 for the SF, unless they do a RR, then who the hell knows

Great choices  would have liked to see Ester in there. Glad Brengle is finally leaving the WC playoffs

I think since Gibbs is in Charlottesville is why she is not playing.

:haha: Finally! And I don't know about Gibbs, I've surmised that Hampton pulled out of Charlottesville because of this playoff. I wouldn't be surprised if only the 8 participants where invited, leaving Nicole in the dust. I wouldn't blame them...

watch out for Julia Boserup. I feel she will make a strong push here.

#27 ·
If seeds are done by WTA rankings then...

1. Christina McHale
2. Alison Riske
3. Jamie Hampton
4. CoCo Vandeweghe
--------------------
5. Sloane Stephens
6. Asia Muhammad
7. Beatrice Capra
8. Julia Boserup

At least CoCo and Alison can avoid a 1R clash  But great matches from the get go  May the best USTA clay queen baby win :armed:

Order I want them to win
Alison Riske
Christina McHale
Sloane Stephens
Jamie Hampton
Coco Vandeweghe
Asia Muhammed (would be higher, but she sucks right now:lol:)
Julia and then Beatrice.

Hopefully we won't be in for a shock like last, though the choices are TONS better than last year. Good luck to all.

What a strong field!! Very happy with all of these choices!

In order of who I want to get the WC:

1. Sloane Stephens 2. Jamie Hampton 3. Christina McHale 4. Julia Boserup 5. Beatrice Capra 6. Alison Riske 7. Coco Vandeweghe 8. Asia Muhammad

I would rather see Alison build up points in qualifying. She's been in a bit of a slump. Same for Christina (not the slump part, the qualifying part). Asia plays barely any tournaments, but always gets invited to these events. I'd rather see her play ITFs. Julia has a lot of untapped potential and has had some decent results and matches recently. I think she can find her stride perhaps. Coco got Australian Open WC and an easy (comparatively) R1 opponent and bombed out 6-1 6-1... don't want that to happen. Trice will have other opportunities, but again I'd rather see her on the ITFs right now, doing what Jamie has been doing and building up points with consistent results.

Jamie is our hottest player on the ITF circuit right now. Good shot to win a round. Sloane loves clay. She gave Wozniak a good battle in PVB, won Trofeo Bonfiglio last year, and made QFs of Junior French Open. With her big Indian Wells breakthrough, maybe she could win a round?
