USST: Roots Classic

Bonjour et Bienvenue a Quebec! (Hello and Welcome to Quebec!). Here at the French-Speaking Province of Canada players are ready to face off to take a prestigious title.

Here in Quebec we have a draw full of new-comers meaning that one of these young ones will rise to the top and show the tour what they've got. This could give one of these kids some real confidence going into their next tournaments.

All of the new-comers are ready to show off their stuff. Will Seles and Hantuchova rise to the occasion? Or will Pierce dominate the field?

Stick around and find out.

Womens Preview

This tournament does not have the strongest field with the exception of Mary Pierce. This looks to be an easy title for Pierce but who knows? We've got a couple of new-comers and they could cause a stir-up.

But obviously there can only be one winner here and here's what I think:

Paola Suarez (ARG) VS. Monica Seles (USA)

Suarez has just come off her first wins on the tour which could give her a lot of confidence. It shouldn't be a suprise if she wins but Monica is new and could cause Paola some trouble.

Pick: Suarez in 2 sets

Predictions:

Here is what I think will happen throughout the whole tournament:

Semi-Finals

(1) Mary Pierce (FRA) VS. Daniela Hantuchova (SVK)

(2) Marion Bartoli (FRA) VS. Paola Suarez (ARG)

Finals

(1) Mary Pierce VS. Paola Suarez (ARG)

Winner

(1) Mary Pierce

The Contenders

I will post here at every tournament who I think the top two contenders are to win the tournament. This week its none-other then Mary Pierce and Paola Suarez.

Mary Pierce

Mary Pierce of France is No. 1 seeded and second in the world here at Quebec. She has shown some great tennis and has a 6 match winning streak and two titles in her pocket. Anywhere Pierce goes she will always be one of the top contenders.

However Pierce has strained a muscle in her foot and could possibly not be able to be as fast on the court as she regularily is. But no-matter she should advance to the finals and possible win her third title.

Paola Suarez

Paola finally won a match last weeks and looks to have a lot more confidence than previous matchs. I really think that this could be a break-through tournament if she takes her time and plays each point well. There really looks to be a good future for Suarez if she can keep up her level of play that she had last week where she lost to eventual Semi-Finalist Chanda Rubin 6-3, 5-7, 5-7.

But however Paola Suarez has been playing a lot of tennis. Every tounament she has entered she has decided to play doubles which could be a big physical drainer. BUT you know if she keeps her play up then it won't matter one bit.

Mary Pierce arrives in Quebec

Coming off of two straight titles on the USST, at Jacksonville and New York, Mary Pierce arrived in Quebec on Sunday, September 28, 2003 to take part in this years Roots Classic.

Pierce, who was born in Canada, currently lives in France. As a newcomer to the tour, she won her first title in Jacksonville, Florida, defeating Marion Bartoli in the final, and the number one seed Chanda Rubin in the semi-finals. Last week, Pierce won in New York, defeating Martina Hingis in the final, in a third-set tiebreak.

Upon arriving in Quebec, Pierce settled in to her hotel room, and went to see the city. After, she answered questions at a press information session.

Questions had been raised about Pierce's ability to play in Quebec. In the New York final agaist Martina Hingis, Pierce strained a muscle in her right foot, causing her to take an injury time out while trailing in the third set. When asked about the injury, Pierce said, "It hurt for a little while. I went to hit this morning, and it was still pretty sore. But I am going to play, and hopefully it won't bother me too much."

Pierce, who is currently ranked number two on the USST tour, is seeded number 1 at the Roots Classic, and will receive a first round bye. Her usual doubles partner, Paola Suarez, is not enrolled in the Roots Classic. Pierce is currently in the process of finding a partner for the week.

Daniela Hantuchova arrives late at the Roots Classics,Quebec after a wild evening of partying at Serena Williams' birthday Bash. She has gotten a bye and is most likely scheduled to play in Tuesday.. In only her 2nd tournament,Daniela seeks to get her first match of any kind since losing in the opening rounds in both singles n doubles in the just-concluded Puppy pooch Championships.. Danlela Hantuchova is reportedly seen chatting with another talented Pro, Mary Pierce and that they are in the process of working out a doubles partnership fpr this tournament. ;)

I've made a huge screw-up I did not realize Paola Suarez had entered the tournament. She has now been put in the draw and can participate in Doubles. Mary Pierce if you want to play with Suarez in doubles you must tell me ASAP. Sorry for the screw-up

Here is a new interview with doubles specialist Paola Suarez :D

Reporter:How do you feel today ?
Paola: I'm very tired.I arrived yesterday late at night .You must know I was not planning to play here, because I wanted to play in a other tournament, but my good friend Mary Pierce persuaded me.
Reporter:I heard there was a little confusion about the doubles teams ?
Paola: Yes,first Daniela Hantuchova was sheduled to play with Mary, but then Marion Bartoli entered the tournament and she needed a partner. That's the reason why we have changed.
Reporter: Your first opponent is Monica Seles ?
Paola: What should I say ? Monica is a legend :worship: She was always my idol :D I know I'm only the outsider in this match, but I try to do my best :D
Reporter: I wish you good luck
Paola: Gracias ;)
