For a match that was allegedly "impossible to predict!", it was really rather predictable. For all the talk of Svitolina defeating big hitters in straight sets, she never looked comfortable in any of those matches. She was barely able to keep her nose in front. It was nothing like the way Kerber, Osaka & Halep dominated their opponents before they beat Serena. And Elina has always been closer to Wozniacki than either Kerber or Halep in terms of counter punching.
The movement? Superb.
The shotmaking? Powerful, precise, rolling that wrist over as she went up the line or hit the cross court angle for the winner.
The serve? Just fine, thank you very much, placing Elina under pressure from the beginning.
Serena? She's baaaaccckkk and in the zone (at least for this tournament).
Tonight wasn't a Wang-dang-doodle blowout and Svitolina coped as well as she could but in the end it was TMS,(too much Serena)
To other matters:
Serena's last three GS finals:
Defeated by Simona Halep at Wimbledon 2019: 6-2, 6-2
Defeated by Naomi Osaka at US Open 2018: 6-2, 6-4
Defeated by Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon 2018: 6-3, 6-3
If not for the 15 minutes that were needed to complete the first two games, Svitolina would have been sent packing in under an hour. Could do nothing with her limited game, as expected. Bibi or her twin sister will be a bigger threat in the final.
