Well done Serena but I am worried about that ankle however Serena does not seem to fazed, love the face that Olympia calls Venus mama :spit:

Martic again lacking any backbone sadly.

Great match from Serena. Hitting the ball so well. Her groundstrokes were just sublime - especially her BHDTL and her angles. Her serve wasn't that good, but Petra couldn't challenge her much on return today. I thought this was the best match she has played off the ground all tournament - even better than against Sharapova. 34 winners off the ground to 16 unforced errors.

Serena played with some finesse too with some beautiful soft angles, dropshots, and even a lob in there... it was great to see her mixing her game up to adapt to Petra's game.

I thought Petra played really, really well - just couldn't handle Serena's pace of shot and just couldn't execute her game well enough to trouble Serena. Just couldn't employ her variety often enough - tried some dropshots, and they worked to decent effort. She really can leave New York with her head held high with her performance today - first run to R16 of the USO, plus she'll be top 20 Monday.

I am extremely concerned with Serena's ankle roll. I hope it ain't too bad and that she can at least take the court on Tuesday against Wang Qiang. Honestly, I just hope she can finish this tournament without withdrawing - win, or lose. Thank goodness she finished this in two so she can rest it over the next 1.5 days.

Great post-match interview from Serena too. Feels like her ankle isn't that bad judging from what she said, but she always tends to downplay her injuries so we'll probably get a better indication tomorrow or on Tuesday.

When Serena fell I thought if Martic could hold and make it 3-2* that she had a chance to win, but she played poorly after Serena's fall until 2-4 0-40 and then she couldnt get that break back

I like how all your posts regarding Serena's matches are about her opponents playing poorly (when most of the time they aren't anyway) without giving her any credit at all.

There was a surreal moment during Serena's MTO, when they were rolling the tape around her rolled ankle...

and the stadium DJ decides to play Tina Turner's version of Proud Mary (ROLLING on the River  )

That was the best Serena moved since coming back. She defended well, was able to hit her FH on the run with actual pace, transitioned to offense, hit some stunning winners from unlikely positions.

She got on the ball earlier, which allowed her to take big cuts at the ball (and they actually go in). Also, she is hitting very heavy here and her strokes are looking more consistent. So impressed with her BH, which has been AWOL largely for 18 months.

Serve speeds were down and she was awkward at times on the first, with many slow balls. I don't believe her back is totally healthy, but she may not need it to be until the final.

Good match. I’m hoping Serena’s demeanour and willingness to answer several on court questions suggests her ankle is going to be ok.

I give Serena tons of credit. Halep, Barty and Pliskova are all out. Serena is still in and made 3 slam finals out of the last 5 majors
Doesnt mean I only watch what Serena is doing and when a pleyer falls, you cant throw away a 2-2 service game
