Very unconvincing from Karo - she probably would have won this 6/2 6/3 if it was a premier.

Still she got the win, and just about managed to close it in straight sets. Whoever she faces here is going to fancy their chances against her after this start to her campaign.

KP was up two breaks to start the 2nd set and then went walk-about.

I have no idea what was on her mind today, but it certainly wasn't tennis.

def one of the best return performances against karos first serve i've seen in quite some time.
and no, karo wasn't that bad. 35/32 as for the stats is plenty for a 2 set match over 1:46 hours. she could've closed it out much earlier as she led 3-0 in second set tho, but martincova still was pretty much alive and kicking. at one point, 5-6 in second set, karo had to produce 4 clutch winners in order to keep her opponent at bay and reach a tb.

I guess you must have missed the 6-0 thrashing that Andreescu put on her in the first set of their Rogers cup match... ?

I was rooting for Pliskova to lose... Aside from her serve, she a club player at best...

Could've been better from Karo. But from what I've seen, Tereza was really great at times, and her ROS was just poppin', so it wasn't as bad of a match from her as the scoreline and ranking difference suggest.

She definitely needs to get better though for sure. I need this girl to finally win a slam :sobbing:

Lol. If she is a club player at best what would that make the rest. Shows how much you know about tennis. Pliskova has one of the cleanest strokes, forehand, backhand and serve on the tour. Her problem is her mental focus.

And movement. It's honestly quite a limiting factor.

Agreed on the rest of her game, though: she strikes the ball rather well, can use some variety, and (*gasp*) actually knows how to play at the net. Sums up a lot of Czech players, which explains why there are so many in the top 100. As to why that hasn't translated to Slam titles (for any but Petra), I'm not sure...

Pliskova is under the radar this major. That could be a positive. This is so wide open
