Terrible first set by Naomi. Vika read her serves and was serving 90%first serves. Naomi pusher version was on court.

Second set. Naomi changed strategy. Took pace off her serves and went for better placements which paid off. Her return started peaking and she started being patient in rallies but went huge when needed. The passing shot on such being defensive position, best shot of the match

Third set Vintage Naomi stuff in very first game. 2 forehand winners down the line touching lines and saved 3 bps in game . She was dominating till 6th game.. Vika started peaking in 6th games where she saved various bps and 7th game Dictated rallies. She was in Vika's every return game.
Then again broke her in 8th game and served it out
First set and third set Naomi were different people . In first set, she didn't even look interested to play and third set , she was comeeeonnn

Naomi's serve, more power and taking risks made the difference at end

Azarenka came out guns blazing in this match. In the first set she made 94% (!!) of her first serves without taking pace off compared to her previous matches. She was returning incredibly well and her down the line shots were causing a lot of damage. Osaka appeared to be quite nervous and was making more unforced errors than usual. Her serve wasn't very potent winning only 44% of first serve points. Azarenka broke Osaka 3 times to take the set 6-1.

Azarenka kept up her good form in the second by holding and breaking Osaka immediately to lead 2-0. At this point, Azarenka had won 8 of the first 9 games (6-1 2-0). Azarenka even had a game point to go up 3-0 but Osaka battled back and broke to get the second set on serve at 1-2. As the set progressed Osaka grew in confidence and played at a higher level - making more first serves, won more first serve points, moving and returning much better. Azarenka's level dropped slightly making fewer first serves, and misfiring on her groundstrokes more often. Osaka did not face a break point for the remainder of the set and broke Azarenka 2 more times to take the set 6-3.

The third set was topsy turvy. Osaka got an early break to lead 3-1. Azarenka had 40-0 on Osaka's serve to get the set back on serve but Osaka fought them all off to hold for 4-1. It looked like Osaka would run away with the match at this point but Azarenka held off 4 break points to deny Osaka 5-1 and instead held for 2-4. They traded breaks again with Osaka finally holding to win 6-3.

A HUGE congratulations to Osaka for winning her 3rd grand slam and 2nd US Open title. She is 3 for 3 in grand slam finals (and has a 9-0 record after reaching the QF of a major!). This was the second time Osaka had a less than ideal reception to winning the US Open (this time no fans at all) so I guess she'll have to win it a third time to get the reaction that she deserves here ;). I'm sure she won't have to wait long.

Tough luck to Azarenka who out of nowhere played amazing these past three weeks. I'm sure she is gutted to have been dominating this match and not come out the winner. Her third US Open final loss and all in three sets. I hope she builds on this form and I'm very excited to see what she does in the coming weeks.

What a tournament!

Well done Naomi! :) A 3 time slam champion! Many more to come? We shall see! She's the best player on hard court right now... winning 3 of the last 5 HC slams? Wow, she's really the frontrunner for her generation. I hope the others step up and we have a few good rivalries at the top!

The match might not have been the best level from Naomi, but mentally a great match from her once again in the final. The first set was awful from her, but when she got it going in the second set, she actually could dictate rallies with her power. Her increased pace pressurized Vika's DTLs and drew a couple of errors. She basically did what Serena usually does to Vika in the last 2 sets.

Poor Vika, she played amazing in the first set but couldn't get it done. She started off very well making Naomi run, her serve and groundstroke accuracy was off the charts! But you could see from the beginning of the second set that she was more nervous and made more UEs. And Naomi did well to take advantage and win in a reverse of the Vika-Serena match! Another USO final lost for Vika, it's a shame she hasn't won here. :( Still, this level of play is encouraging from her for future tournaments. Hope she keeps up her positive mindset!

That's really how you have to do Azarenka. She thrives in those mid-length rallies.

It's why Venus is successful against her. Crank up the power and shorten the points and break down Azarenka's FH with top-tier pace. She can't hit toe-to-toe with her FH against elite power and sustain it.

Totally different match once Osaka started making shots.

difference between naomi and serena is that naomi can effectively counterpunch and doesn't reach for those well placed balls from vika. well done!

Great, great effort from Vika. We cannot take anything away from her. Great job to both as it was a great final.
