Does anyone know when this takes place. I'm planning a holiday to the States for early September next year.

Because of the Olympics, it will start on August 31.

It has nothing to do with Olympics. The timing is glued to The Labor Day
( first Monday of September ) weekend, which will be September 7th next year, and the tournament always starts a week before The Labor Day.

Olympics ends 29 August -- will US Open then start 30 August (i.e. week before Labour Day)?
