Among all those upsets, I choose Jana def. Amelie, because Amelie was on such a great run on claycourts, but the biggest upset of the year for me was Capriati defeating Hingis in the OZ final! That was shocking!

I think we should add Justine Henin's upset over Venus at the German Open.

Venus is no slouch, even on clay-courts, and Henin had to be playing some special tennis to upend Venus that day.

Venus also had to be playing some crappy tennis that day.

anyway, my vote goes to Momo losing to Jana Kandarr at Roland Garros. I was sure she was going to go far!!

It's easy to forget about it now. BUt the biggest upset was Jenn Capriati def. Martina Hingis at OZ. It may not look like an upset now, but no one gave Jenn a chance that day.

I voted for ASV/Hingis at Amelia Island. Arantxa had a terrible year, and that win was a real shock. Even a half-baked Hingis can still beat a lot of players. Not that time. Amazing for Arantxa!

Frankly, I think the upset of the year was J.Cap beating Martina Hingis at the Australian Open this year. J. Cap had a great string of victories going into that final, but so did Martina. And J.Cap's record against Martina was terrible, it was her first final in a major, it had "Martina" written all over it. J. Cap wins easily. That was the upset of the year, in my opinion!

What about Henin beating Jennifer @ Wimbledon?!?!?!

I definitely NEVER saw that coming, as Jennifer was chasing the 3rd leg of the Grand Slam, with all the buzz, and then Justine comes from nowhere to beat Jennifer. Especially on grass, which, Justine being so small, shouldn't be able to trade groundstrokes with such a power hitter.

My vote goes for:

Jennifer/Hingis @ AO
Ruano Pascual/Hingis @ Wimby
Justine/Jennifer @ Wimby
Bedanova/Seles @ US Open

As I've said before, my choice is Meghan over Venus. Venus played amazing from Wimbledon till the US Open, and only Meghann was able to beat her. For her to win on hardcourts, and in such a close match where Venus' mental toughness is hard to beat, I think it was amazing that Meghann held on.

I have to agree that Capriati d. Hingis in the AO final was the upset of the year.

It sure made this year as fun as any I can remember. That says a lot!

definately Ruano-Pascual beating Hingis was very shocking

I was with Boustam Zabira (Elena Bovina's coach) while she was playing and he too was shocked.

Justine Henin is a clay court player beating Venus is no upset imho. This one is wayyyyyyyyyyy too easy.. The biggest upset was Jennifer Capriati whipping Martina at OZ. Marti had Jenn's number and she NEVER has won a slam. Also the response from alot of tennis fans imho was telling.. they were shocked!! What an upset! I also feel that this was the biggest upset because you can see how Hingis confidence dwindled after this particluar match. It was huge.

Amy Frazier, on her worst surface, upsetting Aranxta in the second round of the French.

That is just one result this year I never expected to ever see. I think that really has to get my vote.

My vote goes to Schett d. V.Williams. I knew this was a possibility when the draw came out, but it was something you just couldn't believe (mainly because of Venus' success in slams and her fighting qualities). Venus owned Babsi's number, and looked like she was almost getting back to her best already (i.e. she won Ericsson Open and Hamburg) in lead up to the French. So I thought she would go at least 4th round (which was when she was drawn to play Henin!)

I noticed that Ruano-Pascual d. Hingis was voted the most. This wasn't for ME for a variety of reasons. When I saw the draw this was something of a possibility that I just prayed would NOT happen Firstly, Hingis had a terrible Roland Garros campaign (she was almost upset as was in 99) but more importantly her confidence evaporated. Secondly, she played no warmups to Wimbledon. Last year, she won S'hertogenbosch and came to Wimbledon prepared to win....

I voted for Kandarr defeating Mauresmo at the French Open. For me, there were only two possible choices in this poll. The other one definitely being Ruano Pascual def. Hingis at Wimbledon.

Basically, anything that happens at a slam trumps upsets from all the other tournaments. Monique Viele could have beaten Venus at Indian Wells and I still wouldn't consider it.

For some reason, I felt that Hingis wasn't going to get too far at Wimbledon. I just didn't think it would be Ruano Pascual who would take her out. The only thing that really surprised me was that it was the second time Hingis was knocked out in the first round at Wimbledon.

But Mauresmo had an amazing stretch from February thru to Rome (2 losses in 6 tournaments) and big things were expected of her at Roland Garros even though she hadn't been far in a slam since, oh, Aussie '99.

Venus losing to Schett was also pretty big...but Schett is a formidable opponent. She's a former top ten player and she wasn't as low-ranked as the other two.

Ruano def Hingis

Vivi was fighting against the #1, against a former champion, against the court, against her worst surface..... big big upset it was, she defeated the #1 in the 1st round of a GS...few players can say that...

Maybe it`s me but I didn`t found Amelie`s loss to Kandarr such a shock, I was already afraid that the pressure would get her after seeing that all french papers wrote about her the days before. The biggest shock was there how the french people boohed her off afterwards

I still the aussie open final was the biggest schock but in this poll I think it was Monica losing to Bedanova, I thought Monica would do very well and reach at least the semis.
