I was wonderin who you guys think would win these matches next year.

Mauresmo vs Henin? (on clay, grass &hard)
Pierce vs Henin? (on clay, grass &hard)
Pierce vs Clijsters? (on clay, grass &hard)
Testud vs Clijsters? (on clay, grass &hard)

I'll post my picks tomorrow!

you've picked some pretty tough ones...

here goes.

MAURESMO v HENIN
clay - Mauresmo (as long as it's not Roland Garros, in which case Henin). Last year, she showed that she's right up there with the best on clay in terms of pure talent, and she has all the shots Justine has.
grass - Henin. Mauresmo keeps saying that grass is her best surface, but has done precisely nothing on it during her senior career.
hard - hmm, I'll give the edge to Henin, but I can't justify it at all!
PIERCE v HENIN
I have absolutely no idea how Pierce will come back from her injury, if she does come back... I think I'd bet on Henin to take it on all 3 surfaces.
PIERCE v CLIJSTERS
Same applies, but I think Pierce should be given the edge on clay. Despite her RG final, clay is still Kim's worst surface, and Mary's achieved great things on it.
TESTUD v CLIJSTERS
I'd pick Clijsters whatever surface - but only narrowly. They share surface preferences - both like faster courts - and Kim's just a bit better. However, it wouldn't be surprising if Testud took it - she has the talent to.

These are really hard!

The matches I want to see.

Serena Williams vs Justine Henin

The fastest matchup on the tour, by far.

Justine matched running games with Serena at Sanex. Even seeing a player attempt that strategy is somewhat surprising. VENUS doesn't even try to do that. And then Justine doublefaulted twice in the deciding tie-breaker.

Serena Williams vs Kim Clijsters

This is the matchup that should feature all the wild acrobatics. These two both do these during matches that no one else in the top ten can do. like Justine, Kim was playing Lindsay even at Sanex. In fact, Kim was player BETTER, to my eyes. And then Kim doublefaulted twice in the deciding tie-breaker.

Serena thinks she can pass anyone on the tour.
On the run.
From both sides.

Kim and Justine will both go to the net and challenge that.

It's just like tennis was in 1997. Only twice as fast.

Seles v. Davenport
---- Monica can't lose to her 10 times in a row, can she?

Seles v. Venus
---- Have had some close matches (and some not so close). Monica needs to win 1.

Mary Pierce v. anyone
---- I just want her to come back and play.

QueenLindsay don't count on it. It's really ashame that your clinging to that. I would rather see a much more competitive battle between the two going 3 sets. I think their 3 set matches are the best on the tour.

Matches I would like to see, as long as they're competitive:

Serena v. Jennifer
Serena v. Lindsay
Serena v. Martina

Venus v. Martina
Venus v. Jennifer
Venus v. Mary

Martina v. Jennifer
Martina v. Justine

Justine v. Anna K.
Justine v. Elena D.

Henin 3-0
Henin on clay, grass, and hard, she just has more talent, and better motivation and i think she is fighter and more injury-free)
Pierce 3-0
If pierce is at a 100% she would sweep henin very quickly on every serface
Pierce 3-0
same as henin, infact if mary was at a 100% she would double bagel kim on clay,
clijsters 2-1

the only surface sandrine can have a big impact on kim's game is on grass.

I would like to see more:

Capriati vs. Venus. I really enjoyed all their matches in '01 and I hope Jennifer can keep it together and win one in '02. The Ericson was a heartbreaker.

Also Capriati v. Hingis (loved all their matches) and Seles/Hingis (Monica's wins rocked).

Plus any Mary pierce match-ups. i was lucky enough to be in Paris in '00 and saw her semi win over Martina. I hope she cna come back to that level of play/fitness/confidence.

Matches to look forward to next year:

Serena/Jennifer: It's a new season after all, and hopefully both will be able to wipe their respective slates clean and just produce. If both are at or near their best, this is such a fascinating match up with all the water that's been passed under the bridge.

Martina/Justine Whatever you think about the head-to-head (Martina leads 3-0), Justine is a more complete player since they last met (Oz Open 2000?), whilst Hingis...

This will be fascinating, although I would probably pick Martina's nouse, and her ability to perhaps beat Justine at her own game, It would be for me one to watch.

There's so many others!!! Kim/Monica would be a real treat if both are in form. A real treat.

Venus/Iroda I get the feeling that Iroda might just feel the heat here, but you never know. She has the potential to really worry Venus.

Amelie/Justine on clay....

If Amelie attacks she'd be an even favourite, but she shouldn't underestimate Justine's ability to dominate points and play.

_The Body_ your matches:

1/. Pierce Vs Clijsters, in fact Pierce versus anyone is depending on what physical shape she's in, and if her mind is gear to be competing at this level again. I have my doubts... it's just so long since she's played.

A fit Pierce against Clijsters, still is dependant on which Pierce shows up. Mary has the power edge, Kim has the movement edge. On grass: Kim, on clay: Mary, on hard: Toss up!
2/. Testud/Clijsters. You're looking at Clijsters all the way for me. Nine times out of ten. Testud on her day can beat ANYBODY, when she's clicked in she's an extremely intelligent tennis player. But the type of game Clijsters has is not going to give Testud ANYTHING. Very chances to pressure the second serve, few errors on either wing. The only thing Sandrine would have that could go toe-to-toe with Clijsters on is serve. If she keeps that tight (whihc she's more than capable of), it gets interesting.

If I'm being generous (which I am): On hard: Clijsters, on clay: Testud, on grass: Toss up

3/. Pierce/Henin. Again, let's go with the 'fit' Mary, as opposed to any likely (and probable) variation that arises from her injury time-out.

Mary hits hard. Who hits harder than Mary? Pound for pound probably Schett, Lindsay and Venus?

Justine has beaten Venus once out of three, never Lindsay, and is 2:1 with Schett. So without doing an awful lot Mary is going to have a great chance. Mary also has the experience of 2 GS victories.

So: Hard: Mary, Grass: Justine ( ), Clay: Toss up.

(don't you just love diplomacy?)

Finally,

4/. Mauresmo/Henin. Fairly similar shots/shotmaking, but importantly Justine executes those shots better, Justine has more shots anyway (if Amelie would come to net at the right time she'd be very good.). Amelie has the better serve.

I can't see a surface where either player would dominate the other. Amelie still hits a heavy ball, but not a particularly pacey one imo.

On clay: Mauresmo (slight edge), on grass: Justine, on hard: you guessed it, a toss up!

Glad to see I'm not the only one who needs a napkin when I think of that matchup. "Battle of THE [One-Handed] Backhands!"

I'd also like to see Venus vs. Capriati on something other than North American hard court. I think Venus would wipe out Jenny on grass but clay would be very interesting...to me anyway.
