From the beginning of 1998 to the end of 2000, who were the five best players?

Martina Hingis
Lindsay Davenport
Mary Pierce
Monica Seles
Venus Williams

Tough to name 5 because imo there aren't only 5 that truely stand out (the only ones who really stand out during those years are Hingis, Davenport and Venus).

Hard to say Monica. I mean, she didn't even win a Grand Slam - I'd place Graf before her.

Me too. In fact..
Its
1)Davenport 3 GS 5 Finals
2)Hingis 2 GS 4 Finals
3)Venus 2GS 0 Finals
4)Graf 1 GS 1 Final
5)Serena.. 1GS 1 SF (Sorry Mary
but she had 0 SF in grand slams beside that Rg 2000)

1)Davenport
2)Hingis
3)Venus
4)Steffi
5) Jana or Mary
I'd put Mary ahead of Serena, coz she was in the top 10 in 98,99 and 2000(top5 in the last 2) whereas Serena was just starting out.

Well, if you back to 97, of course Hingis would be first...I guess people always start in 98 because 97 was the year that Martina was completely dominant so there are no questions to be asked...98-2000...I guess I would still but Martina first because she won the YEC in 98 and 2000 and most weeks at #1

Hingis
Davenport
Venus
Graf
Serena

note that Steffi only played in 5 of the 12 slams in this period, but she still ranks above most.

it was one of the most competitive times in womens tennis.

Let's see, what kind of spin can I put on this spun thread? Hmmmm...

Why not "who was the best player from the beginning of May 1999 through the middle of July 1999?"
(hint- it ain't a topspin backhand spin)

Lets look at the whole picture for 1998, 99 and 200.

Hingis:

Two slam singles titles and four slam singles finals.

Finished 99 and 2000 as the number one ranked singles player

Won total of 21 singles titles in that 3 year period.

Won Year End Championships in '98 and 2000.

Won six slam doubles titles including a calendar year grand slam in '98.

Won five slam doubles titles in a row from AO '98 thru AO 99 (with three different partners).

Won year end doubles championships in '99 and 2000.

Lindsay and Hingis are head and shoulders above the rest at that time.

Williams are 3rd and fourth.

Monica and Steffi are still champions and dangerous but not anymore dominant.

I wouldn't put Steffi first in this, but she did a great job considering she was injured for a lot of 98, and only played until after Wimbledon 99. FO and W Final- what a way to go- and who said she was too old!??? Ahhhh twas great :)

Graf profited bigtime from the Seles stabbing in 98/99.

Graf only played two of those years and was only good for 1999 really.

I don't know who I'd vote into fifth place - probably Novotna (although she retired as well) or Seles.

Williams sisters, Hingis and Davenport are a lock IMHO.
