We've hear a lot of 'real number 1' nonsense the past few weeks. Pretty much all of it can be summed up as 'my fave should be ranked #1, cause your fave stinks!'.

Below are the top 16 players ranked by ITF points, and WTA points. In the cse of WTA points, its the top 13 WTA tournament. With the Slams, you only get points earned inthe slams, whether they were in your 17 best or not.

To the uninitiated, the #1 player inthe WTA shuld be the player with the most points in WTA tournaments. Ands voila! There she is.

Code:
by wta points (max 13 tournaments)
----
01 4399 1640 01 Clijsters
02 2899 2108 03 Henin-Hardenne
03 2648 934 04 Davernport
04 2291 3704 02 S Williams
05 2122 810 06 Mauresmo
06 1955 634 07 Capriati
07 1471 606 09 Rubin
08 1400 590 10 Myskina
09 1392 338 11 Maleeva
10 1368 678 08 Hantuchova
11 1258 154 15 Dementieva
12 1234 320 14 Coetzer
13 1203 388 13 Sugiyama
14 1187 410 12 Martinez
[b]15 1160 2376 05 V Williams[/b]
16 904 558 16 Zvonareva
There's very little change, except Venus' ranking falls from the sky like a wounded thunder chicken.

When you just look at the slams, the order of the universe re-asserts itself.

Pretty hard to argue Kim isn't WTA #1.

Clever comment.

Why 13 WTA tournaments BTW ? Is it just because of the 17 max minus 4 ITF slams ?
Yes.

I think the wta list does a great job of ranking durability and consistency while the itf seems to rank players according to ability.

Why would you want to rank them by Slam points only?
I was getting sick of all the 'Kim is a weak #1' crap.

The only reason there IS a WTA is they rebelled against the ITF. Why are people so hung up over the ITF tournaments affect onthe WTA ranking? Don't they know the history?

Anyway, I decided to see if Kim was justifiably WTA #1. So I split off the GS points. Turns out it isn't even close. Kim accumulated the most WTA points in best-of-13 format by a large amount.

The ITF HAS a champion. They name a men's and women's champ every year.

The WTA uses a point system to seed a year end tournament. That's how they get THEIR champ. (At least in theory)
