This is from the San Francisco Chronicle...and it isn't meant to bash Serena; if it's accurate, I can empathize, since I've had many a night like this.

Serena was in no mood for a walk

Tom FitzGerald Tuesday, December 4, 2001

DON'T LOOK for tennis star Serena Williams to be entering any marathons.

She had agreed to headline the recent Fannie Mae Foundation's "Help the Homeless" walkathon in Washington, according to the Washington Post, but then refused to walk "after clubbing into the wee hours." Sources told the Post that foundation president Stacey Davis "had to coax Williams into trudging two blocks of the 25-block march before she was whisked into a waiting car."

I want to know where she parties, sounds like she had a gooooooood time.

Hey, I'm just giving you what was printed.

If someone tried to get me to do a walkathon the morning after a raucous night of clubbing, I'd be far less receptive to the idea than Serena was, trust me.

Yeah I know how those nights can be. I saw a picture of Serena with a whole bunch of celebrities at a party in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure but I think it was after the Rahman/Lewis fight.

I would have done it, only if it was held after 3pm the next day.

Hi Hurley....I know you did not have any bad intent by posting this article

I had already heard about this article, and I knew it was sensationalized....so nothing against you

I just hope Miss Serena is able to get some practising done while she is galavanting all around town with celebrities.

Hell, why didn't they just ask Naomi Campbell to walk? She does it for a living.

I sympathise with Serena. My guess is that she decided to do it from the best of motives, but got distracted into partying as any normal 20yr old would!

I agree with SK. Unfortunately, young celebrities are pigeonholed by their status. They are suppose to be role models for young people. Any time these celebrities, who are young people themselves, step out of line the media criticizes what is normal rebellious, fun-loving behavior. At least, Serena tried to uphold her commitment.

Besides, I think anyone in her position: young, beautiful, superrich and famous would be out partying too!

I don't know about y'all, but I sure as hell wouldn't blow off a charity event hat I agreed to do- just because I decided to dance the night away. She should have had the responsibility to leave the club at an appropriate time and fulfill her obligations the next day.

Shameful Serena!!!!!

the article I read had a quote from the Fannie Mae Spokesperson, saying that Serena showed up and did whatever she was supposed to do.

sk, Serena is a normal 20 year old? I don't think so. Plus, she is of the Jehovah Witness faith. And I've never met a practicing Jehovah Witness member who parties into the wee hours of the morning. Have you? I think we now know why Serena hasn't yet fullfilled her incredible potential. She's been bitten by the fame bug. And that's too bad. When Serena won the 1999 U.S. Open, I thought she would be ready to become a force and dominate women's tennis. In my opinion, Serena's combination of size, power and speed is unmatched in women's tennis history. And she's only won one grand slam singles title. I think Serena should be a more dominant player than she has been. Do you agree?

P.S. - I am pleased that Serena has been involved in many worthy causes over the years. And I expect her to be involved in many more good causes in the years to come.

When I go to a party knowing I'll have to do something important the next day, I would try to keep it short or not go the party in the first place. However, it does happen that I fail Once you're at a party and having a good time, it's hard to leave.
I agree with most of what has been said here. Serena has a right to party just like every other 20 year old. And it's not as if she was still in bed when she had to walk that walkathon. She showed up.

Yes, of course she _should_ have gone to bed early the night before. But she's 20, she was having a good time and didn't want to leave. How many of us can honestly say that we haven't done the same sort of thing? Of course, Serena's profile is that much higher and she gets criticised for doing it, but we've all been there.

the cat - yeah, I'd agree that Serena should have done better than she has. But it's all up to her. Maybe she'd rather be out partying than training. Then again maybe not. She knows what she has to do in order to dominate women's tennis, but its completely her decision as to whether or not she does it.

Dawn, when kids go to clubs to party, they drink alcohol and fool around. You know Jehovah's Witnesses who do that? But I would hope they would have enough faith to keep them from boozing it up. Maybe it's changed from when I used to go to clubs. I hope there are some people who go to clubs, have a good time, and don't get drunk or sleep around. But I thought those people went the way of the Dinasour!
