If you take a close look, her results now are similar to her results before Beijing. It's the Beijing-Stuttgart-Moscow run that's abnormal.
NOTE: At the bottom of this post, you'll find a list of all of JJ's matches from Rome til present. For now though, let's look at the highlight reel.

Wow! Thanks for the work you put in for that analysis. I think the fact that she hasn't had a breakthrough means that something is "wrong."

Doing what she did last year up to this point is unsatisfactory to the tennis world.

Took me a while to understand, but I get it now

Interesting stat. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I feel that any top 30 player playing well could beat an average JJ, whereas to the likes of Serena, Venus, Maria etc need to be playing WAY below average and their oppenents be playing near their best in for them to lose. She just doesn't have enough game to be a grand slam champion, period.

I agree with you. Jankovic has it in her to be aggressive but not for long, and he game just being defense is JUST NOT GOOD enough, once a player who puts it together comes up against her she can and has been beaten, in fact dismissed. Bartoli took her to town in the Aus Open and did so at Wimbeldon 2years ago. Mauresmo just spun her around in Paris, Serena out powered her at the Us Open and nullified her ball chasing tactics, Venus at the World team championships just distroyed her. She needs a better net game and bigger serve and just to be a lot more aggressive, that's what will win her a slam, no good coming on court looking cute. :bounce:

Sorry, but I do think something is wrong with Jankovic. Her former strengths are weakened, and her newer strengths are weakened, too. Her court personality is different, also. Something is wrong.

I understand your point. I think JJ is becoming underrated, actually. I would rate her as the fifth best player on tour right now...not that that's saying a whole lot, but she's better, in my mind, than Safina. She has not been playing as well as she was at the US Open, at least from what I have seen. She doesn't have the ability to beat the big four (Williams, Williams, Sharapova, Ivanovic, in that order) when they are playing well, but she is the favorite, in my eyes, against everyone else. She runs really fast, has good slices, a great return, and that backhand. Her court sense must get a lot better in order to win a slam. She makes too many mistakes, not necessarily errors, but mistakes. She'll hit a backhand down the line, for example, and then hit a lazy forehand short and too far away from the backhand sideline, letting her opponent back into the court. There is no way she is no. 1 or even top three. That was ridiculous, but it would be more ridiculous to me if Safina got there.

I too am sorry to say there something wrong with her.
Pardon me to take this example to illustrate the way I look at the situation.
It is not meant, in any way to compare JJ to a machine or demean or make light of the situation.

Here it is.
It seems to me that since she went through that intensive, short training before the Aussie open, everything has changed: her pesonality, game. None for the better.
I liken it to high end car, where some spare parts were replaced by generic, over the counter parts.

This, against the specifications of the manufacturer and dealer, both of whom recommend genuine parts from their own factory, for optimum functionality of the car.

It seem to me, changes made by JJ, suit neither her pserosnality, nor her core game.
She need to go back to her hold game, which complements her personality.

I really like these statistics. I think it's important to remember that JJ had an incredible end to the '08 season, starting even at the USO. She definitely performed better than she had all year, in a more concentrated length of time anyway.

That being said, I think the thing "wrong" with her is the WAY she's losing matches this year. Last year I think she lost matches because she was tired, outplayed, or was outhit...but from what we've seen here it seems she's just "off" a lot - she's not playing with confidence IMO and it shows in her strokes and her movement. So I don't think her results so far have been below par, just the way she's playing.

She's not playing even remotely close to what she was last year. AT all.

I think results wise there is nothing to be too concerned about. She only won one title before that late autumn last year. I think it's the manner of her losses and the opponents she's losing to though that has people concerned. At any rate, she has shown real vulnerability lately.

Well if you say nothing's wrong with her, you obviously haven't seen her play recently:eek: Her loss at Dubai was really horrendous, she was sooo off, nothing was working for her... She needs her confidence back, Indian Wells might be a good place to get some match play, confidence and rhythm, that's what she needs right now:) The way she played last Fall was really fabulous, she was sooo confident, she needs that back again and we know she can:)

She definitely wasn't playing amazingly well for the first half of 2008 and only began to pick up the pace during the American hard court season. Players go in and out of form all the time. Jelena had a pretty consistent first half of the 2007 season, making many finals and winning several tournaments. She then also had a dismal ending to the season, losing first or second round in many indoor tournaments. So I guess if we compare 2007 and 2008, Jelena did have a period which had some spans of great play and then some spans of pretty average play.

But, she has only broken through as a top player over the last few years. She is still developing as a player and it's still to be seen if she will peak beyond what we have seen so far of her. She needs more time to establish a benchmark to show what she is consistently able to achieve during each season on the tour. I think we should wait a few more seasons before we can really say which spans of seasons were "abnormal" or not.

Just look at players like Venus. For the last few seasons she has a pretty average first half of the year and then a great 2nd half of the year. One could say her recent wins in Dubai and Acapulco could be "abnormal" for this time of the year.

exactly.

If her play style doesn't change, it's likely she won't drop out of top 10 by the end of the year, but she definitely won't be winning many titles.

Hmmm....seems like players have figured her out a bit. She needs to develop a true weapon, so that she isn't so dependent on errors from others.

She is playing like crap. Of course something is wrong with her. If you think her level is the same as last year then you are delusional.

Of course something is wrong. Just look at her form. No one has "figured her out". She's just playing like crap.

 Funny how she was talking so much crap during the off-season. Anyway, hope she returns to form soon.. as long as it's not against Venus :p

All of the above.

She's not playing as well as she did last year. But I also think some of the other players have figured out exactly what some other posters here have. She's a rythm player. Break her rythm, and you can break down her game. Now, you have to be a pretty good player in your own right to do this, but I would bet that's the word in the locker room right now on taking JJ out.

Handling the pressure of being a favorite, being able to bump your game from 98% to 98.5 or 99%, figuring out how to neutralize opponents faster than they can neutralize you... these are the things that seperate the great from the truly great.

JJ will show us which category she belongs in in the months and years to come.

Her game is pretty easy and if you have the right game-plan you will beat her most of the time. She's runner, retriever, whatever you call it..so if she wants to run make her run, she can only rundown she much...corner to corner, don't get enamored with cross-court rallies otherwise she'll kill you with her dtl shots.

And this players have picked upon..watch Bartoli: she was taking the ball early and pounding it..Janko never had a chance.
