Do you think this slam is exceptional considering the unfortunate situations the top players had to face in it (Barty, Muguruza and Kvitova injured, Osaka with the press conference scandal) or is it just the epitome of the most fragile era in tennis history?

Unfortunately, yes. Wimbledon will also probably go to a random name. We are lucky to have Osaka who can at least win hard court slams. But now even that has a question mark on it.

The press conference scandal has been engineered by none other than Osaka herself. The only thing she faces is the music.

This tournament was bound to happen .
we have had so many tragic results this year that we’re protected in the end by some very fortunate event .
brady reaching a slam final . Barty and mertens winning titles after not having to play a full match , Krejchikova reaching the final in Dubai facing players like Teichman in a semi, Pliskova reaching the rome final playing the worst tennis of her life , etc .

It is just the epitome of the most HORRIBLE era in women's tennis history. As soon as you start thinking that it's bad, it gets even worse. What a disgrace!
Too much money, too many spoiled brats, no champion quality, no hunger to consistently win big.

I would assume that with the pandemic, the abysmal level of play and China walking away, the prize money will eventually be reduced by a big margin. So maybe at that point we will have hungry champions again.

Osaka can't handle pressure...
Barty can't practice without getting injured...
Bibi is a walking wounded 24/7 injury machine...
Halep is recovering from a muscle tear...
Kenin is a head case...
Sabalenka still has never reached a GS QF...
Serena is Old, Tired, and Done...

And, to cap it all off -- the "GOAT in Waiting" Swiatek...
...is the Most Overhyped FLOP in Sports Hustory...

Conclusion--You may be onto something.

It's been years really. The supposed "depth" is just weakness from top players.

Not complicated to understand why women don't get coverage or good scheduling like men.

On one side : Krejcikova-Sakkari and Pavlyuchenkova-Zidansek.
On the other side, could be : Djokovic-Nadal and Zverev-Tsitsipas.
In terms of media, this is awful for the WTA.

Crisis? :ROFLMAO: Ovedramatic a bit too much?

It's not a good thing for the WTA, yes, I agree. We need big players reaching the later stages. But it was just unfortunate turn of events. Nobody died, crisis would've been these players being infected with covid and the tournament not being able to announce a winner. It was a bad luck with Barty's retirement, Her Majesty Osaka's requirements, Halep's withdrawal, Sabalenka's bad luck to meet Pavlyuchenkova on a good day, Iga's overplaying, etc. However, we have a set of very sturdy players and I bet all of them would be the tour winning matches' leaders without even checking. It's fine. It could've been better, even much better, but it's still fine.

And what a story it would be if Pavlyuchenkova wins, hard work pays off, doesn't it?
Sakkari would be Greece's first and a national hero.
Krejcikova has been having a season on fire, a doubles specialist turning it all around.

Still I prefer Zidansek not to win just because she has zero WTA titles.

Actually not that bad if we consider that ...

#1 Barty - retired with an injury.
#2 Osaka - withdrew because of, well, ...
#3 Halep - withdrew from the tournament.
#7 Andreescu - rusty, no matches.
#11 Kvitova - withdrew with an injury.
#13 Muguruza - was injured and not ready.

I'm pretty sure the SF would have had a tad more star power had all of these players were fit and healthy and had played the tournament, especially when we consider that 3 of the players in this list were probably pre-tournament favourites.

But it is what it is now especially when we consider that, unfortunately, two of the WTA's most reliable top players (Barty and Halep) did not compete, and the rest of the top 10 are as inconsistent and unpredictable as they come, especially in the Slams (Svitolina, Sabalenka, Kenin, Pliskova, etc.). And Swiatek is probably too new to be 'relied' on to "save the WTA" and defend the title, nor is it realistic to expect Serena to do so at 39 on clay (as much as I wanted her to). So, with half of the top players MIA, and the other half being unpredictable on the day, this was an unexpected, yet expected, outcome.

Although, at least, the players in the SF are at the very least competent on the surface, and would probably have a few more deep runs at RG in the future, so there's that.

We should stop for a while the narrative that WTA is just ATP without Big3. The reality is, that ATP TOP behind the big 3 is crazily consistent compared to WTA. On the other hand, I do not care much, I accept it as it is and find my own pleasure and likability from the unpredictable mess ...

The WTA needs some consistency, with a set of top players able to regularly compete for the Big Titles.

These days, the ATP Next Gens are holding their rank. Yes, they aren't yet at Big 3 level, but they regularly make deep runs. Not just at slams (where best-of-five definitely help reducing the upsets), but also at most of the M1000.

On the other hand, the WTA often looks like random. With the exception of Osaka... but only on hard, and I highly disliked her last stunt. There may be upcoming talent, promising players, but we're still waiting. By the time they appear, it's likely the ATP will already have its next "Top X"...
