The 2003 WGTA Championships: Wimbledon
Welcome to Wimbledon! It's the third major the year, and the top two contenders in the world are the top two players. Although seeded #2, Elena Dementieva is the top player in the game. With only 1 loss this season, she hopes to win her second straight Grand Slam. Daniela Hantuchova, the top seed, hopes to end her title drought, which she won at the Australian Open.

And we welcome Tamarine Tanasugarn this week! I hope everyone sends in new points, and has a great Wimbledon!

Anna Kournikova in Wimbledon

Anna Kournikova arrived today to the third grand slam of the season and says she is ready to fight for the title: "I've been practicing really hard and I've done well in the previous grass tournaments, although I still wanted to have done a little better. I hope I can be at my best in Wimbledon and take at least one of the three titles."

Ashley! You REALLY let it slip at 61 51. You went for the big bang approach, which is why you lost last week. Credit to Kournikova who played a very consistent game...she too changed her game plan, to a degree.

Anna Kournikova defeats Ashley Harkleroad in Wimbledon

Anna Kournikova had to fight back from a 6-1 5-1 deficit, to beat Ashley Harkleroad 1-6 7-5 6-4. It was an incredible match and Anna was glad to come through as the winner: "I was very nervous in the beggining and and I made lots of mistakes, she was playing well and made some great shots, which gave her lots of confidence. In the second set I was more calm, but she was playing great. At 5-1 I thought to myself that I had to nothing to lose and I went for my shots and it worked well, it was a great match and I'm happy that I'm in the quarterfinals."

Venus Williams Defeats Kim Clijsters To Make Quarterfinals!

Venus Williams has taken one step forward in ending her WGTA drought. After coming on tour fast, winning her 1st Title, and cemnting herself at #2, Venus started to fall apart losing to everyone from Dementieva to Harkleroad. Venus has spent alot of time on the practice court, polishing her forehand and 2nd Serve. Today it payed off.

Venus cruised against Kim Clijsters 6-3,3-6,6-3. Venus hit 48 Winners and 44 Errors. "I think I played ok. I need to get used to the grass again, but I'm doing fine. I'm happy to get through this round but I should have lost that 2nd Set. Clijsters is a great player, but I'm so much more pwerful." Venus next faces (1)Daniela Hantuchova. "I hope I can just play my game and come out on top. I'm not ready to go home.

Hantuchova and Roddick arrives in London

American Andy Roddick practices with Hantuchova's coach.

"Normally I practice with Daniela but she didn't want to jinx herself by showing up on the practice courts. I think the five consecutive losses to Elena is hurting her mentally and psychologically. She didn't tell me about it, but I can sense it."

Venus' change of game plan, especially in the first and third sets is what did it for her. That, and Dani deciding NOT to change her game plan. She really needs to become consistent in every game, and only be aggressive when it counts.

Martina didn't change her points, but Monica seems so lost about a decent game plan. She's good at being consistent, but she's never really aggressive.
