That’s such a shame. Does she still have any endorsements in Spain? Was she well liked there? You never really heard about any level of Steffi-like hysteria surrounding ASV in Spain the way you did with Graf in Germany, or Nadal now in Spain. Is she really a PE teacher at a high school in Miami though?

It is a shame. Too often players, and female players in particular, are open to being taken advantage of.

At least she was looking good at the ceremony!

Arantxa is one of those players who look better now than in the day. See also Claudia Kohde-Kilsche, Helena Sukova...

About her popularity, I always heard that ASV came from the more "upper class", while Conchita Martínez was said to be more "working class", and that people identified with the one for whatever reasons.

Shame about all of ASV's woes, it sounds like a nightmare. When you hear of stories like that, you think it would be nice for her former tour-mates to rally round in some way. Or at least go and seek out that no-good husband, preferably armed with a couple of hockey sticks.

It all reminds me a little of Pam's messy divorce with George (has that ended?), although this one seems to be a real troublemaker low-life and no mistake.

And yes, Arantxa was really popular in Spain when she was playing (not that hysteria level you talk about though) but after all her issues with the tax fraud and her family fallout her popularity decreased inmensely. A few years ago she even wrote her autobiography where she accused her family to steal all her money. She made a show of the presentation where she burst into tears and all:

Then when her father died she flew to Barcelona for the funeral but her siblings kicked her (and her husband) out from the funeral parlor and she stormed out talking to the press and making a circus of all

Arantxa's divorce was finalized in Spain. Unfortunate for her, as it means her ex-husband will walk away better off than she does.
