Re: The TF Pick The Best Song Game – Game 299 - The Sixties - Revealed 74/75
Song One – The Supremes - Baby Love
★★
Commercial music sucked back in the 1960s as well, just not as much as it sucks today.
Song Two – The Action – Brain
★★★
Incredible how 90s this sounds. If it weren’t for the cool guitar effects, it would have been extremely dull.
Song Three – The Moody Blues - Eternity Road
★★★★
I’m not against the 60s mystical songs, but this one is a bit on the nose.
Song Four – Paul Revere and The Raiders - Good Thing
★★★★★
Sounds like some of the best of Rolling Stones. That’s a Good Thing.
Song Five – Dmitri Shostakovich - Hamlet Suite, Op. 116
★★
Not my thing.
Song Six – The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy
★★★
Hang on STUPID, Stupid hang on! :haha: Worst misheard lyrics ever. Snoopy, perhaps, but Sloopy? Anyway, the song is… well, stupid.
Song Seven – Wilson Pickett - In The Midnight Hour
★★★
Heavily affected singing doesn’t relate to the banality of the song.
Song Eight – Carole King - It Might as Well Rain Until September
★★★
Poor her. It might as well rain until the 1970s. Her best is yet to come.
Song Nine – Karin Krog - Lazy Afternoon
★★
The only song I had to skip midway on my first listen. I managed to last until the end on subsequent two listens, but ultimately I gained nothing from this. A very unfortunate experiment, ruined not necessarily by the vocals but by the lazy

oh

composition that doesn’t go anywhere.
Song Ten – Sandie Shaw - Long Live Love
★★
Never liked her childlike vocals. A cheesy little song.
Ennio Morricone - Metti Una Sera a Cena - Feat. Nora Orlandi
★★★★★
Majestic but refined (sophisticated?), that’s how I’d describe everything by Ennio Morricone. It’s why his music sounds so timeless. Or maybe it's because of the movies.
Song Twelve - Michel Polnareff - Love Me Please Love Me
★★★★★
Legendary coo on the word “fou”. One of the rare songs that pull off both English and French successfully. He was a strange guy, but the weirdos make history, right?
Song Thirteen – LOS BRAVOS – Sympathy
★★★
Very standard fare for the 1960s, although it’s nice to be able to hear they weren’t native speakers. Always appreciate good vocals.
Song Fourteen – Can - Mary, Mary So Contrary
★★★★★
I can’t not love a Can song. The decade doesn’t matter, the signature drumming of Liebezeit is always there. The same way one can recognize a Van Gogh painting simply by seeing a stroke of the paintbrush. Of course, Mary Mary So Contrary is so much more: the sinister, jarring electric guitar accompanied by anguished singing/crying of nursery rhyme lyrics – everything I ever wanted to hear. This review took me more time to write than all others combined, and I’m still not done, impossible to do the track justice.
Song Fifteen – Katty Line - Ne Fais Pas La Tête
★★★★★
I was instantly hooked by the heavy freakbeat. Most danceable song of the bunch, spiced up by the strong brass section and triumphant horns.
