Women's Look Forward: Rome

Here we are, one week away from the second Grand Slam of the season, and there appears to be chaos at the top of the WGTA ranks. Daniela Hantuchova took a week off; Anna Kournikova has been struggling as of late; Elena Dementieva seems almost lost; Martina Hingis was dominated last week; Venus Williams is still on vacation; Monica Seles took a week off.

So where does that leave us? With Clijsters; Harkleroad; Medina Garrigues; Rubin and Capriati trying to make names for themselves.

Most of the players have byes into the 16's, with only 2 matches in the 32's.

Daniela Hantuchova is the top seed, and she will face last week's runner up Chanda Rubin in the 16's. Rubin made the finals, but was lucky in a couple of her matches. I see Hantuchova getting through Rubin.

The quarter is rounded out with a 16 match between Tanasugarn and Venus Williams. Venus is obviously the big question. Is she back? Is she playing well? Venus has a pretty good record against Hantuchova, but again she's a question mark.

Ashley Harkleroad, the #8 seed, opens against last week's semi finalist Anabel Medina Garrigues in the 16's. Medina Garrigues, despite losing to Rubin in the semis, showed more promise then Rubin (with her game plan, anyway). Harkleroad will have her hands full, and may be upset.

The quarter is rounded off with a Jelena Dokic, #4 Martina Hingis 16. Hingis was dominated last week by Clijsters, while Dokic showed signs of life again. Could this be another uspet? Obviously Hingis is the favorite to reach the semis, where it could be an Aussie Open rematch with Hantuchova.

The other half of the draw opens with #3 defending champ Elena Dementieva facing the winner of Nicole Pratt/Lindsay Davenport (one of the 32 matches) in the 16's. Pratt barely lost to Rubin, so she should face Dementieva. However, Dementieva has been sort of sleeping lately, so Pratt/Davenport have a solid chance at the quarters.

The quarter is between the 16 match of Molik and #6 Monica Seles. This is an interesting match up, as Molik has been playing solid tennis this year, but so has Seles. Seles took a week off, and may be rusty. The winner here is the favorite for the semis.

Kim Clijsters is seeded #7, and she has runner up points to defend. She has a good shot. She faces the Serena Williams/Jennifer Capriati winner (the other 32 match) in the 16's. Trying to figure out who'll win between Serena and Jennifer is tough. Jennifer has more experience, but looked off last week on clay, while Serena barely lost to Medina Garrigues. Still, the way Clijsters played last week, she's the favorite for at least the semis.

The last 16 is between Grzybowska and #2 Kournikova. These two have a heated history, with Anna winning all the matches. But Kournikova has been off lately, and Grzybowska is steady as ever.

TennisILove09's Predictions!
Semi Finals!

Hantuchova vs. Hingis
Seles vs. Clijsters

Hantuchova vs. Clijsters

Hantuchova is #1, no question. After that, anything is possible. Kournikova, Dementieva, Hingis battle it out for #2. Venus will challenge for #4, maybe #3. Seles could pass Venus with a decent showing.

Below the top, no players have anything to defend, so the bigger placements, the higher people will climb.

Interesting to note: all the events since Moscow have been won by players winning their first titles. Only the 2 biggies, LA and Australian Open, are against that.

Will this trend continue?

(LA was won by Kournikova, that was her 4th title; Aussie was won by Hantuchova, that was her 2nd title)
