The REAL Top 10

01 SERENA WILLIAMS - I saw Sanex. Nuff said.
02 KIM CLIJSTERS - Tough call between her and Jenn, but Jenn looked overweight at Sanex.
03 JENNIFER CAPRIATI
04 JUSTINE HENIN - Has played spectacualr tennis of late, but clearly is still not the equal of Williams or Clijsters.
05 JELENA DOKIC - Since US Open, Won teice, lost in finals 3 times in seven tournments.
06 MONICA SELES - Dokic is winning almost as much against better players.
07 SANDRINE TESTUD - Whacked the world #1 twice in a month
08 AMELIE MAURESMO - Never really recovered from R1 flame out at RG.

If any of the rest of the top 20 players played anyone good, I think they'd lose. ASV or Amanda might find the old magic for a match or two. But that's it.

09 ARANTXA SANCHEZ-VICARIO
10 AMANDA COETZER

-- MEGHANN SHAUGHNESSY - Won Quebec City in September and hasn't made it out of the first round since.
-- SILVIA FARINA ELIA - Very ordinary Year
-- ELENA DEMENTIEVA - Hasn't beaten a top ten player since March
-- MAGDALENA MALEEVA
-- IRODA TULYAGANOVA

This is my personal opinion, based on who I think would beat who, TODAY. Not for the year, just today.
The top four healthy players are Jenn, Kim, Serena and Justine.

Injured or Retired

xx LINDSAY DAVENPORT
xx VENUS WILLIAMS - Hasn't played since US Open.
xx MARTINA HINGIS
rt NATHALIE TAUZIA
rr ANKE HUBER

If Serena played Jenn today, I believe Serena would beat her.
If Serena played Kim today, I believe Serena would beat her.
If Serena played Justine today, I believe Serena would beat her.
So Serena's my #1.
Kim would, I believe, triumph over an out of shape Jenn in three sets. Etc. Etc.

What is the criteria for the REAL top 10? Is it who did what the past 3 months or the past 52 weeks or what? Is it who played the most tourneys? What are you basing your opinions on Volcana?

Literally, if two players played today, who do I think would win.
Injured players don't count.
I did check the last couple months of each players year to sort out Henin, Dokic, Seles, Testud. Mauresmo is just not getting the results on the courts.

If you think Jenn would beat Kim if they played today, you would put Jenn #2. I didn't .

Venus
Serena
Seles
Clijsters
Henin
Dokic
Mauresmo
Capriati
Testud
ASV

*note Venus was hurt earlier but with tendonitis it is day to day* So she COULD play today at this exact minute.

*not I excluded Davenport and Hingis off the list due to them being hurt right now at this exact time*

1. Venus Williams
2. Serena Williams
3. Kim Clijsters
4. Justine Henin
5. Sandrine Testud
6. Monica Seles
7. Jelena Dokic
8. Elena Dementieva
9. Jennifer Capriati
10. Amelie Mauresmo

but soooo subjective. On what surface? In what situation? (If it was Fed Cup, Dementieva would be a lot higher.) And there's the whole 'Henin can beat Testud who can beat Seles - but I don't think Henin can beat Seles' problem.
Quibbles: um, Volcana, Elena D beat Hingis - then #1 - only a few weeks ago in Moscow, and Amelie last week in Fed Cup.

no no no Sarista7

Seles would spank Kim. and Dokic would spank the crap out of Elena D. She hasn't even won a tourney yet. And how can anyone bet against Monica as number 3? Monica has beaten/a winning record against all the other players except for Venus and Serena??

Actually on my rankings # 4,5, 6 are equal.

no no no Dawn
Kim would beat Monica, who has played only one top 10 player since Toronto. Kim's on fire right now, and she's pretty close to Serena imo. (Obv not above S though!)
Jelena would beat Elena D. That's why I put Jelena above Elena D. She wouldn't whip her though. Even in Moscow, with Elena's shoulder injury, it wasn't a blow-out. ( maybe I shouldn't talk about blow-outs round here any more)
I don't think Henin can beat Seles. But I think she can beat Testud, and I think Testud can beat Seles. So I guess my #4-6 are slightly confused too.

No no no again.. lol Monica will not lose to Kim. heck no! Seles would beat Kim imho. Especially on clay.

U underestimate Monica

Monica has recently beaten Hingis/Capriati and Serena. all top 10.

Seles has also recently lost to Daja Bedanova, and not had matchplay against top players since the US Open. Kim's been improving steadily since then, and was unbeatable in Fed Cup, and was very close to beating Davenport (who has a perfect record against Seles this year) in Munich.

but yes, if 'twas clay, Seles would win. Grass - Kim. Indoors - Kim. Hard courts - hmm, toss up.
Therefore, Kim wins.

Ok one more time lol

Kim is good but Monica is fitter and better also just because Kim is hot at this moment does not mean she would beat Monica who has been out for 3 months? Who's hotter NOW doesn't necessarily mean that they will win against a PARTICULAR player. (EX) Venus has been out for 3 months.. but imho would thrash Testud right NOW.

Ah phooey it really is how u look at it.

there! 'Compromise can be reached on the message boards' shock! 'It really is how you look at it' - Dawn Marie. I personally think that Kim has improved dramatically in the past three months, whereas Seles has gone back slightly from her incredible level in the summer. Put another way, I'd bet on Kim taking a Slam next year, but not Seles.

Venus has been out three months, and I can't think of a player she WOULDN'T thrash right now. From Serena to Sandrine, I think Venus has their measure. Exception? If she was playing Henin or Mauresmo on clay. Those are the ONLY circumstances I can foresee her losing.

I agree. Who's hotter now DOESN'T mean whey'll win against a particular player. But I still think Kim would beat Seles.

Good to debate Dawn

I don't think you saw Kim play on the Masters or in the Fed Cup...no way Seles would beat Kim. And she certainly isn't fitter!!! I still think Seles' time is over. What great performance did she achieve this year? When did she win against a top 5 player?? She won a couple of lil tournaments in Asia, that's all. No...if they would play now, even on clay, I would put all my money on Kim.

Seles-def-Capriati @ Oklahoma
Seles-def-Capriati @ San Diego
Seles-def-Hingis @ San Diego
Seles-def-Hingis @ Los Angeles
Seles-def-S. Williams @ Los Angeles
Seles-def-Henin @ Toronto

Pretty good record considering she was out for 5 months. Regarding the Asian tournaments...Monica played those because she wanted to accumulate enough points to keep her ranking high because her finalist points from the Chase last year were coming off.

I don't think we can 'assume' who would beat who. Post-US Open you have Seles beating Dokic 6-3, 6-3 in Brasil. Then Dokic goes on the beat Clijsters in Tokyo 7-5, 6-4. Clijsters goes on to lose to Huber in Filderstadt and Dokic to Hanchtkova. Has Huber even won a set against Seles? I know she hasn't won a match. Then Clijsters goes on to win two small titles. And takes Davenport to a 3rd set tiebreak before losing. Tennis is a weird sport, and Dawn and Satrista touched on this...you have Seles beating the player who is beating Clijsters but you have Clijsters beating the player who is beating Seles. The only time Kim and Monica played was in Australia this year and Monica won 7-6, 6-0. Both players have improved in form since then so you can't say so and so will beat her. Look at the records. If anyone can come off a break and do well it's Monica. Look at '95, look at this summer! I don't think Kim and Monica would have an easy time against each other. And I don't think Seles' time is over either. What makes anyone think that? Because she won 3 little titles post US Open? I think it would be worse if she lost at those 3 little tournaments. There is no doubt Kim is on fire now...with her romp of Aranxta in Spain and her match against Davenport in Munich. But that doesn't mean, to me at least, Kim or anyone is going to beat a certain player. Especially someone they only played against once.

I'm not even going to touch this subject because I know it will give me a headache.

But Dawn Marie and sartrista7 - I'm greatly amused by reading your argument/compromise. LOL - much better than listening to Mary Carillo and Johnny Mac!

Dawn and sartrista7 - Sorry. Venus hasn't played since the USOpen. That's NOT 'day-to-day', it's a prolonged absence, almost 3 months, that shows no evidence of ending any time soon.

Dawn - Why Monica ahead of Jelena? Both have been winning a lot, but Jelena is playing harder competition. And why Jenn SO low? Below Amelie?

sartrista7 - Elena over Jenn?!?! You actually believe if they played tomorrow Elena wouldn't fold like a cheap suit?

Dawn, I agree with most of your arguments, but the first line almost gave me a fit How can you say Monica is fitter than Kim ? Could you please explain ?

Testud hasn't beaten Seles since 1998, Monica has won their last 7 matches. IMHO, if Seles played Clijsters right now? I think Seles would win, its so funny how people place more emphasis on the loss to Bedanova, than the caliber wins over Serena, Hingis, Jennifer and Henin that GoMonica mentioned ... not to mention that Seles beat Henin in Oz too!

Considering Clijsters and Seles; let's just wait 1,5 months and let's see! They will probably meet in the hopman-cup.
