We may assume the cutoff ranking of the AO 2019 Quali to be 231 ± 3 (95 %CL). And ranking at 253 in the alt list has the chance moving to the QD in the *end.


The Australian Open Quali Cutoff ranking could be evaluated by the formula

Qcutoff = #MD + #QD - #Qualifier - #QWC

with the assumption that

a) no. of injury/illness/pregnancy/retirement/banned etc. = no. of protect rankings
b) All MDWCs are eligible in Q draw.



For the 2019 AO
Qcutoff = 128 + 128 - 16 - 9 = 231

For the AO 2018 and before
Qcutoff = 128 + 96 - 12 - 8 = 204

I kept Abanda IN since I didnt know official info (and the motivation of the tweet I saw are a bit absurd to me). Also, I think a couple of Aussies ahead of Grymalska could become MDWC, so two more spots will be available. And furthermore, surely some withdrawals will arrive

Would also like to see Ormaechea sneak in. She's really only played on clay this year, so not sure if she'll head to Australia or play some clay ITFs to begin the year. She hasn't played a GS since the 2015 French Open. Hoping to see her in quailies at Roland Garros this year, though.

Torro Flor said the same last year, and ended up getting into AO Q, withdrawing from an ITF, flying last minute to flop and got back to the ITFs

That being said, Abanda makes it into Q anyways, so I guess she is not confident to fly to AO just to lose QR1
