I don't ever remember a time or an era where SO many top level players all came back around the same time, all being active with not much to defend collectively for a big chunk of time-

Serena Williams has nothing to defend all year
Victoria Azarenka has nothing to defend until June
Maria Sharapova has nothing to defend until April/May
Petra Kvitova has noting to defend until May
Sloane Stephens has nothing to defend until July/August
Madison Keys has nothing to defend until March and next to nothing until July
Sabine Lisicki ( not really elite at all) has nothing to defend until June

Most of them have tried to come back more than 6 months now and hardly achieved anything significant. Sloane might have the exception but it looks like she won't achieve much more anyway.

Really don't think Slow Anne can rest on her laurels though. She needs to cushion her ranking quickly or an early exit in her NY title defense will take her out of the upper echelon in one fell swoop. She would do well to snap out of it sooner rather than later.

Then again, Mladenovitch reached a career high in the top 10 while on a 15-match losing streak so what does it even matter?

Very possible that Stephens does exactly the same thing this year :tape: Konta, at least, should fall beneath her in a few weeks when Miami points come off. Stephens should only need a couple of match wins to get to the top 10 from there but even if she doesn't, if Goerges randomly starts slumping and no one beneath Stephens has a huge result, she'll float upwards even if she doesn't gets Ws, much like Mladenovic did.
