Thank you Fran:)

I never knew Conchita got as high as #7 in doubles. She always COULD volley, like many women though I guess she just feels more comfortable from the baseline.

One of my favorite Conchita moments was the 1998 Fed Cup semi in Spain vs. the US. It was the deciding match and Martinez/Sanchez won a long thriller vs. the Americans 6-4 6-7(5) 11-9 over Fernandez/Raymond.

spain wnet on to win the final over the Swiss.

I had almost forgotten that match. I'm pretty sure that I have that in my collection. It WAS a great match with a lot on the line. I'm not a big fan of Raymond's. But both teams really gave it everything they had.

Hi Fran, Barcelona 91 was the first year the tournament became a Tier II as they bought the rights from Tampa. Navratilova, ASV and Maleeva were also in the field...and I was in the stands ;-)

are u sure Barcelona became a Tier II in 1991?
Yes, I am.

That very same year Sydney, San Antonio (#1 & #2 Graf/Seles final), San Diego, Leipzig (Graf/ASV final) and Milan (Seles/Navratilova final) shared the same prize money ($225,000) as Barcelona.

Fran 16: It's interesting you posted Conchita's record against Nº1 players, but it would also be good if you post how many times Conchita beat them while they were holding the top spot: not too many, unfortunately!

yeah, it was the best doubles match i have seen :D and Raymond/Fernandez saved a MP in second set. It was a great fight for both teams, and the match finished at 1:30 AM
Amen to that :worship:
Nothing similar to the manslaughter Conchita and ASV made to the swiss in the final match

Thanks for this comprehensive resumé of Conchita's achievements. You're going to have to adjust the doubles h2h later today as Conchita & VRP are playing Martina and ALG in the doubles final of the Canadian Open: two grand dames out there showing the youngsters how it's done!!

Sorry your gal lost Fran - it must have been pretty tight as Conchita and Vivi were 4-2 up in the third, having broken ALG's serve. I wonder if that'll be martina's last tier 1 doubles title - if so, she'll have faced Conchita in her last major singles final and her last tier 1 doubles final............

Thanks Fran for posting this thread :D This is my little contribution ;)

- An interesting fact: Conchita won 100 matches in 1993 (71 singles + 24 doubles + 5 mixed) That's a fact that very few other players have achieved

- Conchita's list of wins over top 20 players

I checked your updates, great job. Conchita used to have a nice game in old times, yet she was not a great at my eyes, I enjoyed her game. :wavey:

IMO while Conchita's style isn't for most viewers or fans, those who play tennis can learn a lot from watching her in person. When I saw her at the 1999 US Open I was in awe of her deft use of spins and sheer variety. I gained (or regained-I first saw her at the 1989 Fed Cup in Tokyo) a new appreciation for her game.

Somehow the nuances in her game get lost on the TV screen.

Wow, I hadn't heard of Conchita's retirement. Congratulations to her a nice, long career. The first time I ever saw her, were in highlights of her 1988 US Open 1R match vs. Chris Evert. They didn't spend much time talking about Conchita at all. But I felt just from watching those few clips that big things could be ahead for her.

Well done Conchita! :worship:

That 1994 Wimbledon tournament was her perfect tournament. She played unbelievable and it was matter whether she could do it against Martina. Martina was like she can't do this forever but she did it long enough to win.
