In addition to an awesome tennis game, Danielka possesses a brain that has a constant thirst for knowledge. Her family places a special emphasis on education and Danielka has excelled in the areas of mathematics, physics  , computer studies and languages. So, to celebrate Danielka’s love for learning, I’ve started this thread.

This is the thread in which we CPers can discuss mathematics, physics, biology, languages, and anything else that is related to learning. However, I think that we should leave discussion on the Slovak language to Mousee’s thread.

We each possess knowledge that can be used to help those who need assistance, or simply to educate those who are interested.

Just think: If you were ever lucky enough to meet Danielka, would you like to discuss the weather, or would you like to discuss animals that live in the Australian outback or the way to integrate a logarithmic function?

So let’s open our minds and learn while we support Danielka. You know that it’s what she would want ;)

Wow, that's a pretty good idea imo :worship:

It's not completely off-topic... cos Danka would like it :D
And we all can learn sth from each other, help us out with difficult stuff etc. :)

And since i didnt see u around here before... :
Welcome to the CP epi :wavey:

Good thread!:yeah:

I personally would like to talk about integrating a logarithmic function. But I can talk about other things too!:haha:

Let us start off with literature, a subject everyone can talk about. Who is your favorite author and what is your favorite book? I'm talking about serious literary masterpieces.

My favorite is 論語(The Discourses and Sayings of Confuscious). It shaped the Chinese's way of thinking, and it is still very powerful today!:worship:

My favorite English book is To Kill a Mocking Bird. Great book, what can I say!

BTW, who is your favorite physicist Epi?

I like Richard Feynman. After reading his book, "Surely Your Joking Mr. Feynman", I laughed my ass off! Very interesting character! I almost wanted to be a physicist, but of course, when you can even barely understand the principles of Newtonian physics, you're in deep trouble!

I like "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. "1984" was really scary.

another great idea for a thread :bounce:

as far as Dani's season was going well...it's pretty much, admit it, dead so we can definitely still try to share stuff with others

anyway, staying on topic with you guys, I like a quote from Orwell that a guy on other board had on his signature:

"Being in a minority, even a minority of one, did not make you mad. There was truth and there was untruth, and even if you clung to the truth against the whole world you were not mad. Sanity is not a matter of statistics"

genious!

I like most shakespeare plays, Macbeth is probably my favourate. I've just done King Lear and im about to do Orthello. I dont read them for fun mind you! I read them for english literature.
A good war novel would be 'Regeneration' (cant think of the author) and 'Birdsong' (that one not for those under 16!!)

Then ofcourse theres Harry!! :p

He he, so this is where that topic went.

I recommend stuff by Robert Heinlein and Arthur Clarke. I'd recommend Asimov too, but I haven't even started with the Foundation series yet (cant find the first book). Frank Herbert's "Dune" is also cool... just hated the sequels though.

The thicker the book the better, Paycheck. Try "The Source" by James Michener for size. "We the Living" by Ayn Rand is not such a long read, relatively. I found the book very interesting. Objectivism - that's Ayn Rand's battlecry.

Thanks gd on the advice and suggestions for a fine read!:wavey:

I'm actually getting less afraid of the think books. All my text books are 600 pages and more, so I'm trying to get used to it!

Paycheck, Richard Feynman is also my favourite physicist :yeah: . My high school physics teacher was obsessed with him, going so far as to give the whole class lollipops to celebrate his birthday :bdaycake: . He’s my favourite because he had the gift of being able to explain complex phenomena in an understandable way. He also did some pretty interesting work in the field of quantum electrodynamics.

In order to make this thread not completely :topic: , I've tried to find some information on the physics of tennis. My first instalment is on the physics of a tennis racquet and it can be found here:

http://users.wpi.edu/~tanguyen/tennis.html

I haven't really had a chance to look at it closely, so I'm not sure whether or not it is correct. Anyway, have a read and discuss what you think.
