SELES withdraws from Berlin

Berlin, Germany: Monica Seles withdrew from the German Open in Berlin, after tournament officials included her in the draw without her having committed to the event. Seles said,"I did not commit to playing in Berlin and no one was more surprised than I was when I saw my name in the draw."

The reason Seles is not playing is because she was stabbed by a deranged German spectator during a tennis match in Hamburg. The man served no jail time. Seles refuses to return to Germany to play tennis. "I am sorry to say this, but I will never play in Germany after the way they treated me. It was a slap in the face for me and for women's tennis."

Seles hoped her doubles partner, Russian starlet Anna Kournikova didn't feel let down. "I hope I'm not letting her down by not playing in Germany. I hope she understands the position I am in and how I feel about all this."

Anna knows that Germany brings bad memories to Monica and understands her situation. :)

Due to rankings, I put Anna Kournikova in Seles' draw, and Dementieva took Kournikova's first place in the draw :)

Sorry Monica

Venus really needs to become more patient on the clay. She goes for so much in a few games, and then hardly anything in other games. Davenport played a good consistent match.

Lindsay Davenport reaches semfinal after beating second seed, Venus Williams in two set 6-4 6-4 to meet Anna Kournikova in the next round who had a walkover.

"It's nice to be able to win. I think, I had not played up to my best level, but i tried very hard to work out some strategy that work best for me. I had a great expectations on this game. Just that sometimes, I was not concentrating."

Venus Knocked Out Of Orbit By Davenport!

Today, (2)Venus Williams crahed out of the Berlin Bol 4-6,4-6 to American Lindsay Davenport. Venus had some words to say after this horrible match....

"I was just too erratic. I need to adjust my game better to clay. Lindsay played well, but I have no excuse for losing to her. Hopefully I will be back to my normal self after this tourament."

Red hot Hantuchova ready to conquer Europe

April 29, 2003

BERLIN, Germany (AP) -- Coming off of a huge month in Australia, the hottest player of the year, World’s No. 1 ranked singles and doubles player Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, goes for her second consecutive singles and doubles titles (third overall in doubles).

“Someone, pinch me. I am so blessed to have done so well this month,” said a laughing Hantuchova.

When asked how the transition from hardcourts to the red clay will affect her game, she said, “It’s going to be hard playing on the red clay and obviously will take a while to get used to, but I have enough belief in my game to win it all,” said the extremely confident Slovak.

The No. 1 seed plays newcomer Russia’s Elena Dementieva in the first match of the day.

“All I know is Elena has a big forehand. I’m more concerned about my game. If I play well, I will win. If I have an off day, it will be a tough match.”

what a surprising result. Hantuchova has never lost before a final; Dementieva is playing in her first event. Sometimes you have to have luck to win matches, events, and Dementieva had a cointoss in the 3rd that changed the outcome.

This has to be the weirdest match to date. They had SO many cointosses, it was crazy. Oddly enough, Hingis got the tough end of a few...especially in the first set. Like the first match, sometimes it takes luck to win.
