Right. People are saying that Lindsay Davenport is not a valid #1, and have two main lines of reasoning:
1) She didn't win a Slam/make a final this year
2) She has a very poor record against Venus, which somehow makes her the inferior player

But how, and who, could we replace her with? Make Jennifer #1, and we fulfil criteria 1. But - Jennifer has an even worse record against not only Venus, but also Lindsay and Monica. She has strong records against Martina and Serena - the #4 and #6 respectively, i.e. nothing to shout about in comparison to Lindsay and Venus. And if Jenn was #1, this would equally invalidate her status. Because she's clearly *not* better than either Lindsay or Venus. Add on the fact that she has only 3 titles, and her case is looking decidedly iffy.
Venus? She has winning records over both Lindsay and Jenn. She's won 2 Slams. She's won a decent number of tournaments. The fact remains, though, that unless we specifically tailor the ranking system to the minimal number of tournaments Venus plays, there is no mathematical way she can be #1. And it's not as if she has to wear herself out playing 20 tournaments to get it - playing another 1 or 2, even with her bad clay season, would probably have been enough. By not playing those extra 1 or 2, she made a conscious decision not to pursue the #1 spot. And even if she did , she'd still be playing significantly less tourneys than virtually anyone else in the top 200. (Exceptions: Serena, injury-ridden Anna K and Mary P, age-restricted Angelique Widjaja, Su-Wei Hsieh.) So we can conclude that her playing schedule is very definitely NOT the norm; therefore the rankings shouldn't have to adapt to it, it has to adapt to the ranking system.

So. Jennifer's claim to be #1 is as equally tenuous as Lindsay's, but the ranking system cannot mathematically get Venus there unless it makes radical and unnecessary changes. Whether Lindsay herself accepts it is irrelevant; TSequoia1 made the rather clever suggestion that, by distancing herself from a #1 ranking perceived by many as invalid, Lindsay is in fact attempting to rid herself of the pressures which hampered Hingis and Capriati whilst they were #1. It's not as if Lindsay didn't want it, or didn't do her damnedest to get it. And there's very little we can do except accept that the ranking system is laid out for the players; they know what they need to do to get #1; whether they do it or not is their business. You'll notice that Venus has made no claims to the #1 spot herself. She knows she hasn't done enough to get it.

Lindsay can have it for now. She deserves it after that amazing fall!!

What's the good thing is that soon, there will be a 3 way fight for the number 1 spot. At the Aussie Open, Lindsay, Venus and Capriati will have a good chance to be number 1. Whoever wins it will probably be number 1. And whoever reaches the finals is number 2. That however depends on their performances relative to each other as well.

And maybe when the number is crowned/confirmed, then there will not be any more disputes

I don't argue who is or who is not #1. If by the scoring system Lindsay is ranked #1 so be it. If Jen by the scoring system is #1, then so be it. When Hingis was ranked as #1 it was fine with me. My point is that it places tremendous pressures on these young ladies when in actuality they maybe as low as #5 or #6 in ability. The ridicule they face from writers, commentators, peer players, and fans is heartbreaking. Yes they earned the points under the bureaucratic ranking system of the WTA. But one thing remains clear, it is not judging the correct criteria. Of course in any one match, anything can happen. But what went on with Martina Hingis was a joke. Lindsay is much closer to being the best, few can defeat her consistently. To be the best you must beat the best. But if a player cannot meet that criteria than it is comforting for them to know they can at least be ranked #1.
